Tobagonians flock to parade

London made the point in his speech at a reception at the Scarborough Port Terminal Building, following the parade of detachments of the Protective Services and other uniformed voluntary groups in commemoration of the 44th anniversary of Independence in Tobago.

London said, “The issues of the relationship between Tobago and Trinidad, and Tobago’s place within the unitary state of Trinidad and Tobago, continue to fuel much debate.”

The time is “overdue for a final, mutually acceptable and workable solution,” he stressed, assuring that “this phase of the process will allow for the widest possible participation and consultation.” London noted that Tobagonians had the “responsibility” to access and evaluate the information, examine the options, and indicate “our preferences” in as persuasive a manner as possible.

“This is the time for mature and in-depth analysis, not political cynicism and dangerous rhetoric,” the Chief Secretary advised.

“We will be given the opportunity to determine our relationship, our status, our destiny; let us maximise that opportunity!” he urged.

Thousands of persons, dressed in varying shades of the national colours – red, white and black, lined the streets of Scarborough in brilliant sunshine to witness the spectacle.

An even larger and more colourful crowd was expected to return to Scarborough yesterday evening for a cultural show and the annual CLICO fireworks display.
