Cops in court for Pundit’s beating
The constables, who have between four and 13 years of service, were arrested and charged on Wednesday by Insp David Cooper of the Siparia CID.
Late Wednesday night, the men were granted bail ranging between $175,500 and $132,500 by Justice of the Peace Dexter Soodeen.
They were charged with a range of offences including kidnapping, false imprisonment, throwing a noxious substance, robbery with violence and assault causing grievous bodily harm. The charges stemmed from a report by pundit assistant Rabindra Choon, 49, that he was attacked by policemen while on his way home at Ackbar Trace, Old Siparia Road. Choon claimed he was severely beaten by police and sustained fractured ribs and abrasions for which he had to be hospitalised.
