Schools’ football gets $.35m from BG

This revelation was made during the launch of this year’s competition at the Marriott Hotel, Invader’s Bay yesterday.

The sum of $250,500 will go towards the boys’ version, as well as a development programme, while the remaining $100,000 will cover the expenses for staging the girls’ matches.

According to Aleem Hosein, head of Government Relations and Public Affairs at BG, they will be sponsoring the 2006 girls’ Intercol competition for the first time as well as the league’s website— www.ssfl.org— which will be officially launched on Thursday.

With regards to the website, Shane Correia, a representative of Web and IT Solutions, noted that it will initially cover matches in the North Zone, with separate links to each school and player.

As an added interest, there will also be features on past stars of the SSFL, including Dwight Yorke, Russell Latapy and Clint Marcelle.

In a media release issued at the launch, BG Trinidad and Tobago noted that, in its fifth year of funding the league, the firm “maintains its commitment to assist in the development of youth, sport and education throughout Trinidad and Tobago.

“The ongoing partnership with the SSFL has provided BGTT with the continued hope of fostering the teamwork and motivation of these young players,” the release stated.

While action begins on Thursday with a North Zone double-header at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, the East and South Zones will kick off on Friday with double-headers at the Larry Gomes Stadium, Arima and the Manny Ramjohn Stadium, Marabella respectively.Matches in Tobago will commence next Tuesday while the Central Zone gets going on September 20.
