$200,000 bail for prisons officer

Nicholas Jarvis, 34, of Mafeking village, Mayaro, stood before Magistrate Andrew Stroude in the Port-of-Spain Tenth Magistrate’s Court charged with trafficking marijuana.

Jarvis was represented by defence attorney Maillard Howell, who made an application for bail. Howell, who succeeded in his attempts to secure bail for the prisons officer, told the magistrate that a police tracing done on Jarvis revealed he had no previous convictions. He is also the sole breadwinner of his household, and is married with three children.

The magistrate then sought advice from the prosecutor Sgt Prospect on the bail application.

She responded by saying that she is not objecting to bail and she would leave it in the hands of the court. The magistrate then ruled that he be given bail with surety to be approved by the Clerk of the Peace III.

Jarvis was charged and arrested by PC Denoon and taken to the Carenage Police Station.

He was previously granted $60,000 bail at the police station.

It is alleged that on Saturday, at Hart’s Cut, Chaguaramas, Jarvis had in his possession 298 grammes of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking. According to police, Jarvis was arrested shortly after 11 am. He was attempting to board a Coast Guard boat to take up duties at Carrera Prison.

In addition to the marijuana valued at $2,000, it is alleged that he also possessed 18 packets of cigarettes, two packets of cigarette paper (bamboo) and two cellular phone items which are illegal to take into prison. Jarvis will reappear in court on September 15.
