TTUTA out Govt committee

Permell said the committee, chaired by Professor Ken Julien, to assess the options for the transfer of two teachers’ training colleges to the University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT), has failed to meet consistently since being given the mandate by Cabinet on January 16. Permell said TTUTA had no choice but to withdraw from the committee, as a result.

The committee’s deadline to report to Cabinet was yesterday.

Government wants to merge the Valsayn and Corinth Teachers Training Colleges with the UTT, which would include bringing the colleges’ lecturers under the management of the university.

Permell said TTUTA is scheduled to meet with the Ministry of Education to discuss the proposed transfer.

“Teacher education in this country is far too important an issue for it not to be taken seriously,” he said.
