‘Rowdy’ Kevin on a musical mission
“I am a man on a mission to share my music with not only my fellow artistes, but the world at large,” he stated.
A true son of the soil from the small village of Lopinot, Rowdy grew up in a musical family, where his mother and siblings sing in the church choir. He told Newsday that growing up in this country area is what inspired him to follow his musical dreams.
He first came to the forefront in 1999 with two collaborations, one with Denise “Saucy Wow” Belfon titled “Take Your Time” and the other, a tune with TT’s foremost soca star Machel Montano and Belfon, called “Burnin,” produced by well-known Barbados’ producer Peter Coppin.
With Rituals Music, he honed his craft alongside fellow label mates Doc, Cheewah, 3Canal and he has also worked with Samuel Jack, gaining knowledge in a range of musical genres.
He left Trinidad in 2002 and headed to New York where he went on a soul searching journey, during which time he became heavily influenced by the Rastafarian culture.
However, despite this influence, Rowdy remained true to his culture and native music, Soca. He returned to Trinidad and Tobago in 2005 after spending almost eight years abroad, literally bursting at the seams with new music.
To date he has released “The Letter,” a song about relationships both good and the bad, “Blaze It,” a track dedicated to the rampant crime situation in TT. His latest release is titled “Girls,” a song about being an observer in a party taking in the vibes and watching the interactions of the patrons as they have a good time.
This year, Rowdy has aligned himself with Infinity Entertainment, a new promotional outfit on the local entertainment landscape, which aims to bring a new flavour and diverse creativity to the music industry.
He also plans to compete in the International Soca Monarch competition as well as the Groovy Soca Monarch competition.
