Three TT amateurs qualify for Pan Am

This after they either won their respective bouts or finished third on the final day of the Third Pan Am Games Qualifiers at the Chaguaramas Convention Cen-tre, Chaguaramas on Saturday.

The TT qualifiers are Super Heavyweight Enoch Romeo, Middleweight Andrew Fermin and the talented Clevon De Noon who contested the Bantamweight Division.

Fermin was adjudged the best fighter in his category after his two earlier victories in the middleweight division.

On Friday, Fermin missed out on a shot for the gold medal battle when he was beaten by Carlos Gongora of Ecuador in his semi-final fight. But he advanced by virtue of being beaten by the eventual gold medallist.

He got the nod over El Salvador’s Oscar Rivera who was also beaten in the semi-finals, but saw his conqueror being defeated in the final.

Fermin had earlier impressed selectors with victories over Monroy Jeison of Colombia and Canada’s Francy Ntetu.

The other local qualifier Romeo also went down in a hard-fought contest to Puerto Rico’s Gerard Bisbal in the final in the (91+ category) embarrassingly beaten 20-0.

His defeat in the final placed him among the top two fighters in his Super Heavyweight division and earned him a shot at the Pan Am Games in Brazil.

De Noon was the first TT fighter to earn a qualifying berth for the championship when he got the better of Haitian Emmanuel Augustus 15-11 on Friday night.

Meanwhile, two Jamaican fighters, Nicholas Walters and Ricardo Smith earned qualifying berths following the final round of competition.

Walters won gold in the Featherweight category (57kg) when he destroyed Jesus Cuellar of Argentina in the final.

Smith, like Fermin, advanced through the third-place qualifying process which gives the losing semi-finalist to the eventual winner the nod.

Guyana’s Lucas Navarro and Ryan Jeffers (flyweight) and Clive Atwell (bantamweight) also secured places to Brazil, while John Jackson and Hugh Meonaar both of United States Virgin Islands (USVI) qualified.

Jewel Lewis is the only Grenadian fighter to qualify for Brazil, as likewise Wilky Compfort of Haiti.

And Tureno Johnson is also the only fighter from the Bahamas to qualify for the July slugfest.

On Friday he whipped 18-year-old John Jackson of the US Virgin Islands 23-16 to snatch gold in the welterweight division.
