Clash of the football giants
San Juan are the 2006 Intercol champs while the “Green Machine” won both Zonal title and the Big 5 crowns last year.
And the two teams lead the way in the zone, with San Juan claiming full points after two matches, with St Augustine two points aback.
In other matches in the East, Toco hosts the win-less Malabar while El Dorado, the “Blue Thunder”, welcomes neighbours Hillview.
The “Westmoorings Tigers” St Anthony’s and Malick have both stormed out of the gates, with each team securing a maximum six points from their previous two North Zone matches. The Tigers oppose third-placed QRC at the Royalians Ground while Malick faces Diego Martin at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo.
Reigning Zonal champs Mucurapo and Fatima, two of the teams favoured for top honours this season, are both without a point so far, and they will be looking to make up lost ground when they meet at the Fatima Ground.
Naparima, the 2006 South Zone title holders, share the top spot with Princes Town, but have a superior goal difference. Naps can cement their place atop the standings with full points over St Benedict’s in the first match of a double-header at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium, Marabella.
Princes Town will travel to Siparia while the win-less Moruga squares off against Presentation San Fernando in the second match at Marabella.
Defending Central Zone champs Carapichaima was the lone team to record a win in the opening phase on Tuesday. They will be aiming for their second straight victory away to Chaguanas Secondary.
Waterloo High and Marabella Junior, who both drew on Tuesday, will meet at Waterloo while Presentation Chaguanas host bottom-placed Tabaquite.
Scarborough and Mason Hall, both victorious in the opening matches in the Tobago Zone, will face off at Shaw Park today. Scarborough hold the edge over Mason Hall, for the top spot, on goal difference. Roxborough will start their campaign against Signal Hill, the perennial zonal champs who were humbled 2-0 by Mason Hall on Tuesday.
All matches will kick off at 3.45 pm, excepting the Manny Ramjohn Stadium double-header, which will get going from 3.30 pm.
