TT women in Olympic bid

Coached by Technical Director Jamal Shabazz the TT women arrived in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico on Saturday and have trained each day so far leading up their opening fixture.

They also face Costa Rica on Friday after which the top two teams from their group will advance to the semi-finals.

The other competing countries are Jamaica, USA and the hosts, Mexico in Group “A”, while Canada, Costa Rica and TT are in Group “B”.

The semi-finals and finals of the CONCACAF Tournament will take place on April 9 and 12 respectively.

The TT team comprise several prominent players who campaign in North America as well as locally. Among them is prolific goalscorer Maylee Attin-Johnson, national Under-17 captain and Petrotrin midfielder Mariah Shade and Tasha St Louis of US club New England Mutiny.

Also in the squad are Joe Public midfielder Ayana Russell along with new additions, US-based 21-year-old twin sisters Marissa and Maria Mohammed who play with Fredericksburg Lady in the US.

US-based forward Kennya Cordner, a TTFF Women’s Player of the Year” is also on the team. Cordner is attached to Northampton Laurels, the team she was voted as “MVP” for the 2007 season after helping them to an East Conference play-off berth with six goals.

TT is one of only two countries to participate in every CONCACAF Women’s Tournament (the other is Canada). They advanced to the Final Round of the 2008 CONCACAF Women’s Olympic Qualification after winning the Caribbean Group “A” First Round over Grenada, St Vincent and The Grenadines, Suriname and then eliminating Puerto Rico in the Second Round Series.

Their highest finish in a CONCACAF women’s competition was third place at the inaugural Confederation championship in 1991
