Starlings spike Stag v-ball title

Michelle Mohan and Pauline Woodroffe of Starlings Volleyball Club scores a major surprise capturing Stag Spikedown women’s crown at Mayaro.

The Mohan/Woodroffe tandem turned back the challenge of national middle blocker Nadiege Honore and her partner Stephanie Woodroffe in the final on Wednesday, Republic Day. They won the first prize of $500 and the title of Mayaro “Spikedown” Queens”. Michelle is the daughter of former national captain Alvin “Magic” Mohan while Pauline is the sister of Stephanie who was on the opposite side of the net. Coincidentally all four players are members of Starlings.

In the semi-finals, Michelle Mohan and Pauline Woodroffe defeated Glamorgan’s national stars Aisha Sealy and Jenna Ferguson 11-6, 11-8; while Honore and Stephanie Woodroffe stopped Elki Phillips (Point Fortin Slammers) and Shanna Ferreira (Challengers) 11-6, 11-9. National players David Thomas and Kelvin Edwards took the men’s title when they came from behind to topple last year’s champion pair of Nolan Tash and Gideon Dixon 8-11, 11-8, 11-10 in the final.

In the semi-finals, Thomas and Edwards edged out national senior and junior captains Mark Daley and Sean Morrison in a thrilling three-setter 11-10, 9-11, 11-8; while the Tash/Dixon tandem defeated the Keegan Garcia/Kelvin Alleyne pair at 11-9, 10-11, 11-5. The Vessigny Beach champion pair of Abishay Kissoon and Saleem Ali finished fifth by stopping Darrell Davis and David Camacho 11-8, 10-11 and 11-10 while the Vessigny “Queens” KellyAnn Billingy and Melissa Tang were unable to prove themselves as Tang did not show up.

WOMEN: Honore/Woodroffe beat Ayana Dyette/Marina Camps 17-15, 15-14; Aisha Sealy/Jenna Ferguson won by default over Billingy/Tang; Honore/Woodroffe edged out Michelle Mohan/Pauline Woodroffe 15-9, 13-15, 11-7; Elki Phillips/Shanna Ferreira won by default over Billingy/Tang; Mohan/Woodroffe got the better of Dyette/Camps 16-14, 9-15, 11-9; Ferguson/Sealy beat Phillips/Ferreira 15-11, 15-11.
Fifth Place: Marina Camps/Ayana Dyette.
