TT get four picks on Prez XI

Trinidad and Tobago have been rewarded with four picks on the President’s XI team to oppose the visiting Sri Lankans in their final warm-up match in St Vincent.

This was revealed by a source close to the Trinidad and Tobago cricket team yesterday. Trinidad and Tobago captain Daren Ganga will skipper the team that will include his fellow countrymen Dave Mohammed, Dwayne Bravo and Aniel Kanhai. Ganga made headlines against Australia with back-to-back Test centuries in the first and second Cable and Wireless Tests against Australia. After being omitted against the Australians for the one day series the selectors have decided to give him a chance of getting in some much needed batting practice ahead of the First Test against the Sri Lankans that gets underway on June 20 in St Lucia. Mohammed who tasted one Day action with the West Indies team on tour of Kenya in 2001 gets a chance to show his wares as a candidate for the spin bowling department.

Anguillan Omari Banks was the first choice spinner used against the Australians and turned heads in his direction after his fine all-round displays. He got 46 not out in the world record score of 418 for seven that gave the West Indies their lone victory in the Test series. Mohammed will have to bowl exceptionally well to dislodge Banks. Dwayne Bravo, the talented Queen’s Park batsman enjoyed a good Carib Beer regional competition and runs against the visitors will keep the selectors looking in his direction. Bravo has developed into an all rounder in the last couple of seasons and will be looked upon to perform both roles if chosen for the regional side.

Ceramic Trinidad Merryboys middle order batsman Aniel Kanhai earns his pick after a very successful Carib Beer series playing for the West Indies “B” team. Kanhai scored a double century against his home country and got another later in the season. The left-hander is a no-nonsense type of batsman and will be eager to taste international action. The four players will immediately start training in preparation for the match before they leave for  St Vincent.

Lankans beat Shell Academy by 114 runs

ST GEORGE’S: Sri Lanka beat the Shell Cricket Academy Invitational XI by 114 runs in a warm-up match yesterday in Grenada.

The Academy Invitational XI managed a final score of 129 for nine off 50 overs in response to the visitors’ 243 for seven off 50 overs. Sri Lankan captain Marvan Atapattu top scored with 99. The Sri Lankans won the toss and batted first. Romesh Kaluwitharana was the first to go for only 6 runs. He was caught by Floyd Reifer off the bowling of Jerome Taylor. Naveed Nawaz was next, caught by Taylor off the bowling of Carl Simon for 26. After a disappointing start, the Sri Lankans reached 70 for two with their captain pacing nicely. The Shell Cricket Academy Invitational XI missed an easy chance of getting rid of Kumar Sangakkara when he was 12 with a bad miss by Jason Bennett when he could have run out the Sri Lankan middle order batsman quite easily. Sangakkara was eventually caught by Simon off the bowling of Dwayne Bravo for 21 runs.

Mahela Jayawardena and Atapattu put together a good partnership before Jayawardena was caught by Deonarine off the bowling of Bravo for 35. The score was 183 for four when the  partnership was broken. Atapattu was next to go for 99 runs. Since the World Cup in which Sri-Lanka qualified for the semi-finals, they have had to contend with the resignation of  captain Sanath Jayasuriya, the retirement of top batsman Aravinda de Silva and have experienced mixed results in seeking to rebuild their side. Yesterday’s match marked the opening of Sri Lanka’s Caribbean tour which is comprised of three One-Day Internationals and two Tests.  Shell Academy Invitational XI was captained by Reifer of Barbados and included students and graduates from the Grenada-based academy.

TT footballers taste S/African winter

JOHANNESBURG: Trinidad and Tobago’s footballers got their first taste of the southern winter in South Africa when coach Stuart Charles-Fevrier put them through their paces during a two-and-a-half-hour session in Johannesburg yesterday.

Skipper Reynold Carrington and the team arrived in South Africa just after noon (TT time) yesterday following a four-hour flight from Nairobi, Kenya.  The squad checked in at the Sandton Sun and Towers Inter-Continental, Johannesburg where members of the squad were greeted by officials of the 28-floor luxurious hotel which also connects to a nearby shopping plaza on the tenth floor. The TT players caught the eyes of many at the hotel who were aware of South Africa’s bid to host the 2010 World Cup and their friendly international against the Caribbean footballers on June 15 in Port Elizabeth.

Fevrier’s team trained at the University of the Witwatersrand Ground, a 15-minute drive from the hotel as temperatures ranged between six and 11 degrees Celsius. The St Lucian-born coach  seemed well pleased with the conditions, describing it as one which should play a great part in bringing out the best from the players. “We are really comfortable here. But I must say that we have to continue to impress upon the players to keep focus and maintain the right attitude on a daily basis. “The players have had nothing to complain about and we must give credit to all the officials, especially Mr Jack Warner, for what we have experienced on this tour so far. “The accommodation here is excellent and the training facilities are also up to par and I will expect this to motivate everyone to do the job to the best of their ability. “Without a doubt the players are experiencing what those at the highest level experience,” Charles-Fevrier said yesterday.

FIFA vice president Jack Warner, who left Nairobi for London, England yesterday told reporters that they should not be fooled into thinking that TT was lacking in any way because of the absence of Blackburn Rovers striker Dwight Yorke. Warner made sure that all was well with the TT team as they left for Johannesburg and even called from London to make certain that all was well with the team here. Fevrier has had to answer questions here about Yorke’s status with the national team “The guys we have here are good enough to play at the highest level but if we have a player like Dwight Yorke in the squad, it will be a plus for us because of the experience he will bring to the team. However our players are capable of producing good football,” said Charles-Fevrier.

Junior golfers ‘the strongest’

The Trinidad and Tobago junior golf team selected for the upcoming Caribbean Championships has been described as the strongest ever. Robert Costelloe, chairman of the Golf Association’s Junior Golf Committee, said yesterday that the 13-member team, which will be led by Simon Merry, is a credit to all who have contributed to their development.

Occasion was a media conference to announce the national representatives for the annual regional championships which will be staged this year in Freeport, Bahamas from July 6 to 11.In attendance at Republic Bank’s head office on Park Street, Port-of-Spain were Costelloe, Anna-Maria Garcia-Brooks, Manager Group Corporate Com-munications, Republic Bank; Ian de Souza, General Manager Designate, Republic Bank Limted Risk Management; Basil Gonsalves, Selector/Junior Co-ordinator, Golf Association Junior Golf; and Sandra Montano, head Junior Golf Programme, Pointe-a-Pierre Golf Course. The team selected is (Boys) Under-18 —- Simon Merry (captain), Jordan Delaney, Shane Costelloe; Under-15 —- Ben Martin, Robert Llanos, Dahomey Kadera; Under-12 —- Glen Charlett, Joshua Galt; (Girls) Under-18 —- Diana Torry, Reva Persaud; Under-15 —-Tracey Clarke, Victoria Seenath; Under-12 —- Catherine Clarke, Anneke Ward.

Costelloe, a former junior player who was among the first to be involved in the local programme to develop the sport at that level more than 23 years ago said golf was the perfect conduit through which young people could channel their talent and energies into becoming wholesome adults. He praised Republic Bank for their foresight going back four years ago to get involved in the junior golf programme which has already produced two regional championships (2000 and 2001) and a runner’s up spot last year in the Cayman Islands. Costelloe said in the coming weeks the players will concentrate on their mental game and are to be sch-ooled in the techniques of handling the pressures of the game with emphasis on the short game and course management. Garcia-Brooks also announced that Republic Bank will host a workshop next week for the young golf envoys when they will benefit from motivational sessions and exposed to aspects of team building which is a necessary component of success. She expressed confidence that the young golf stars will excel in the Caribbean Championships and was proud that Republic Bank would have a hand in their expected exemplary accomplishments.

Ian De Souza said the continuing challenge is to ensure that diverse opportunities abound for promoting self-development among the youngsters since the goal is to provide a core foundation that will allow them to reach their full potential. “Whether it is golf, football, netball, our Youth Apprentice Programme or our Pan Minors Scholarship Programme, we would like our young people to learn that self-development begins with commitment and a healthy dose of integrity,” De Souza said. He said Republic Bank view the upcoming Caribbean Championships not just as a competition for the young golfers to shine but as an opportunity for them to grow. In her turn, Sandra Montano traced the development of the sport at the junior level observing its growth from exclusively St Andrew’s Golf Club at Moka to Tobago, Brechin Castle, St Madeleine, Chaguaramas, Point-a-Pierre and now at a girl’s college in San Fernando. “You could say that junior golf is on the move and this is due in a large part to the involvement, support and friendship of the Republic Bank,” Montano said

‘I did what any mother would do’

“I did what any mother would do.” Maternal instinct drove Onika Stoute, 20, to turn herself into a human shield in order to protect the life of her only child, two-month-old baby girl, Timika Stoute.

Yesterday, when Newsday interviewed a recovering Stoute from her hospital bed, she appeared to have mixed emotions about the drama at her Laventille home, which claimed the life of her 18-year-old brother Him Demanie Rudolph Stoute, wounded her right shoulder, but left her innocent child unharmed. “My brother did not deserve to be killed because he was just an NHA worker,” said the grieving woman. She added with relief, “But I am happy that my child is alive and well, and very soon I will be able to cuddle her again.”

Stoute, who was shot in the right shoulder, is well on her way to recovery and has been listed in stable condition. Doctors carried out emergency surgery on Tuesday and removed the bullet lodged in her shoulder. They anticipate that she will be discharged from hospital shortly. Emotionally, Stoute was clear that she did what she had to do to save her daughter, and vowed she would do it again even if it meant being killed in the process. “I did what any mother would do, and I am happy that my baby is alive,” said Stoute. She expressed outrage over the murder of her brother and called on the police to find the persons responsible for his death. She is also convinced that the persons who killed her brother carried out the brutal act because they were angry with him for not teaming up with criminal elements in the area. As she was comforted by her father Russel Hernandez, Stoute said that she is only sorry that she was unable to save the life of her brother.

Onika claimed that Demanie, the baby and herself were all asleep in the house at Pashley Street, Laventille early on Tuesday, when gunmen stormed the house. Two gunmen who entered the house accused Demanie of killing one of their friends on May 11. This was hotly denied by Stoute who said that her brother was not a killer. Police said the gunmen fired three shots which shattered three windows and struck Onika in the shoulder, who remembers throwing herself on Timika, shielding her from the bullets. When the gunmen fled the scene, Onika, bleeding, ran outside seeking assistance, met a neighbour and asked him to take her to hospital. She then returned inside with the neighbour who took baby Timika into his care. Her brother was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Baby Timika is being cared for by relatives. Police investigators said yesterday that Him Stoute was a member of a Laventille gang, which is responsible for several gang related shootings.

Morvant man shot three times

A 21-year-old Morvant man was shot three times while walking along Thomas Trace, Mon Repos around 9 am yesterday.

Police reports revealed that Sherron Lambkin was ap-proached by a gunman who shot him three times. He was rushed to hospital and warded in serious condition. An eyewitness told Newsday that the suspect fled the scene by running away. Newsday learned that officers of the Morvant Police Station secured a warrant for the arrest of the suspect late yesterday.
