Family of 10 still awaiting help

Rooplal Singh said the majority of his Liverpool Lane Extension home was destroyed after being hit by the landslides during bad weather associated with feeder bands from Tropical Storm Don. Since then, he said, all his family has received were two mattresses given by the Regional Corporation on Wednesday.

Singh’s son-in-law Michael Lovell yesterday said the family still has no place to cook and are still split up with some staying at the homes of neighbours and other by the homes of friends.

Lovell claimed the family still has not been visited by any police or fire official and calls to their MP Nyan Gadsby-Dolly have yielded no results.

Lovell said officials from Gadsby-Dolly’s constituency office told him they would send a field officer to assess the situation but up to press time, no one had visited. “I called the Minister and she said she was in a meeting.

Is this how they go about treating people in the community? I have the Minister’s number.

I called her and they are still not coming,” Lovell complained.

“We are the same people who are putting our fingers in ink to put politicians in office and this is how they treat us.” The family, Lovell said, feels that their cries for help are being ignored.

Lovell said family members are even contemplating protests to highlight their plight. “I just asked my family if we should light some tyres on the road and protest. We cannot cook in our house as the kitchen is damaged.

That house could collapse at any time. We need help,” Lovell said.

The family was told on Wednesday by an official from the regional corporation that they would have to be relocated since the house is unsafe. Anyone willing to help the family can contact them at 759-9553 or 477-7002.

Pierre ready to excel at 2017 Caribbean Premier League

The modern game of cricket has evolved over the last two decades. Players can no longer be one dimensional, and Pierre has more than one aspect to his game. He is a left arm orthodox bowler and useful lower order batsmen – and he just loves to field.

“I really like to field and that is a big part of my game. Saving runs in the field and taking spectacular catches are a big part of who I am,” Pierre told Hero CPL.

His exploits in the middle with the bat, ball and fielding are already drawing comparisons to the Indian left handed all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja.

“My main goal in the Hero CPL is to go out there and bowl and give the team a good start with my bowling.

“It is always a pleasure to represent your country but in this case a franchise that is based in your country is also a really great accomplishment for me. I am just really happy to be a part of the Trinbago Knight Riders Franchise.” KP, as he is called by his friends, stated that family means everything to him and his mother has had the biggest impact on his life even though he hasn’t seen her in more than two decades after she moved overseas to help provide for her family.

“I have not seen my mother for 21 years, she went away to make a betterment for herself and our family. When I go out there to play the game, I always try to make her proud because I haven’t seen her for so long. It did not happen the way it should have happened but you know she is my strong hold and motivates me to go out there and perform.” With that determined look in his eyes Pierre told us that failure is not an option. He stated that his success is driven by being the breadwinner in the family.

“I know I have to go out there and try and do what I need to do to provide for my family, so that motivates me to get up every morning and go out there and perform and do what I have to do to be a provider.” Pierre is hugely proud of his country and is thrilled about showcasing it at this year’s Hero CPL. He believes “that the diversity and Carnival like atmosphere is what makes Trinidad and Tobago so special. When you come to ground here it is always like a carnival atmosphere.

“Come out and support the team it is a really good team and a balance team. It is just about the fans getting behind us and we will try and do all the work to make them proud as well.”

Name twin towers after Penny instead

Managerial misdirection, I would have to day.

The monosyllabic street names of Duke, Prince, Queen and King (former name, now Independence Square) make sense.

They tell us about the country’s history. So do the Indian-named streets in St James and the Frenchnamed streets in Woodbrook. Will these names all be gone in time if this insensible exercise of the corporation continues unabated and unopposed? The corporation has already violated history by renaming King George V Park the Nelson Mandela Park and it will be decades if this name sticks, if it ever does.

In any case, Mandela has done nothing for this country and I don’t think South Africa will name a street after any Trini, regardless.

Why did it do this? Doesn’t make sense to me.

I am rooting for Penny Commissiong as a national darling and I think renaming the twin towers (Eric Williams Financial Complex) to sit alongside the Brian Lara Promenade would be so much better. More significant than that messy, nasty Queen Street which disgraces her image.

The twin towers are a huge city monument befitting Commissiong and actually it is also used as a postal address.

That seems much more acceptable and respectable. They are a modern development in the country’s history.

Michael Anthony has it right. I agree with his arguments against changing the name of Queen Street. What kind of politicians do we have? If this is the best that can come from these people, may God really help our nation.

Crix announces partnership with Trinbago Knight Riders

Through this partnership, Crix is demonstrating its support for the Trinidad and Tobago-based Knight Riders cricket team in the fifth instalment of the popular regional T20 league.

Having won the tournament once, Crix believes the Trinbago Knight Riders have a great chance of winning the competition for the second time with the likes of popular Trinidadian cricketers, Sunil Narine, Denesh Ramdin, Kevon Cooper, and the brother pairing of captain Dwayne Bravo and Darren Bravo. They are joined by international franchise players, Brendon McCullum and Hashim Amla, who return for their second stint with the team.

“We are 100 percent behind the Trinbago Knight Riders.” Much like Crix, the Trinbago Knight Riders team is versatile, featuring a team of multi-skilled players, who together, will go for gold in the tournament. Stop playing politics, Tim

Is Gopeesingh for real with his comments on 2014 and 2015 being “the best academic years” in comparison to 2017? What Gopeesingh is failing to mention is that these “best years” came at a time when there seemed to be focus on SE A but school indiscipline was soaring. He needs to give a more realistic view when quoting statistics that only serve to mislead the public.

A comparison cannot be made between 2014 and 2017 as there has just been a change in the way the exam is written. In any initiative, if there is a change, room must be left for teething. The exam now has been reverted to a place where students can have more time for preparation and still attain holistic development which, as a parent, I believe is most important.

The former minister went as far as to highlight that 15 percent of students scored below the 30 percent mark but did he say what will happen with these students? They will be given assistance to aid them in not only being better prepared to rewrite the SE A but the minister has also identified possible areas for attention for these students.

The question should now be asked of the former minister: were proper teaching measures put into place during his tenure and, if so, why were these students unable to attain at least 30 percent? These scores are not a reflection of the exam but a sad reality of the foundation the students would have received.

This Garcia continues to highlight as one of the key areas of concern — literacy and numeracy.

Gopeesingh needs to stop playing politics with our children’s education and let the people who now hold the reigns have an opportunity to do their job.

Bastille Day celebrations in PoS

After assuring that France is very active on the global warming front, with 194 countries having adopted and signed the Paris Agreement to date, Picquart took a jab at the US President for his recent withdrawal from the Paris Agreement. He said: “Not because the newly-elected President of a very large country has decided to withdraw from the Paris Agreement, that one must give up. On the contrary, we must re-double our efforts to ensure that our planet remains habitable for our children and grandchildren.

‘Make our planet great again!’ as President Emmanuel Macron has been proclaiming since June 1.” Picquart said President Macron has since decided to invite world leaders to Paris on December 12, to review the progress of the Paris Agreement at the conclusion of the COP21 (A United Nations Climate Change Conference).

Among the other challenges of which the ambassador spoke is that of transnational crime, recalling one year ago, when criminal terrorism caused the deaths of 86 people in Nice.

He said it is absolutely necessary for free people to come together to eradicate these plagues. Picquart then noted the close cultural ties between France and TT , and once again sang praises to Calypso Rose (McCartha Linda Sandy Lewis) who has experienced great success in France where she was awarded a Victoire de la Musique earlier this year.

An excited Picquart stated that France, is a great sporting nation, that may well be hosting the Olympic Games, in 2024 once ratified by the International Olympic Committee during its next session which takes place in Lima in September.

Then raising a toast to TT he said: “I renew to you my warm wishes for our two countries to be able to build together projects which bring hope and progress. Long live the Republic, Long live France.

Long live Franco- Trinidadian friendship.” Dennis Moses, Minister of Foreign and Caricom Affairs in bringing congratulatory greetings to the Government and People of the French Republic on their Bastille Day celebration said here in TT , our countries’ intertwined histories have left traces of French influence in aspects of our culture and architecture as well as in our agricultural sector.

He added that since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1962, there have been collaboration in many sectors including health, water management, aviation, construction and security.

Moses said too, there has also been significant engagement in education, with the Alliance Française being a pillar for French language and culture in TT .

In more recent years, Moses spoke of TT ’s participation in a Carnival Trade Mission in Paris and other European cities, as well as local films being screened at the Cannes Film Festival.

He then expressed the hope that both countries continue to mutually benefit from the sharing of our rich cultures and move toward deeper collaboration, following the Schengen visa waiver agreement signed in 2015.

After commending France for its leading role taken on the global stage in dealing with environmental issues, Moses raised a toast to prosperity, well-being and bon accord between the people of Trinidad and Tobago and the French Republic.

Reconsider liquidation

It was the first truly homegrown conglomerate that mushroomed into CL Financial (CLF) and spread its wings beyond our narrow national and even regional boundaries.

It demonstrated what is possible for our local business community and it is therefore important how we treat with it in this its hour of need. To simply dismantle and abandon it should, in my view, be the last option, if it is an option at all.

CLF was a victim, like many other major conglomerates, of the recent global economic depression.

In addition, one may claim it was run by some who were too adventurous.

Be that as it may, there should be dialogue with its shareholders and a close look at their plan of restructuring and repayment of its debt.

We must try to find a solution and let the legacy of Duprey live on. To do otherwise would be a sad day in the history of our country.

However, I firmly believe that those individuals at the helm when CLF experienced its “difficulties” should not be part of its new “hierarchy.” Also, in my opinion, it should be clear that the extremely broad range of areas of interest should be rationalised.

Big 5 pan concert …lots of surprises in store for patrons

It will feature the five top steelbands – Desperadoes, Massy Trinidad All Stars, bpRenegades, Republic Bank Exodus and Phase II in association with Hadco, and the show will be done in remembrance of the late pan aficionado Theodore “Teddy” Guerra.

Each band will begin its repertoire with the event’s theme song, after which they will each perform for 35 minutes, inclusive of their surprise guest performers.

Martin Cain, assistant manager of Desperadoes kept the band’s surprises close to his chest. All he would divulge is that the repertoire, comprising seven selections, will be a touch of class, and a touch of every genre of music from hip hop to classical to calypso.

The band will feature two guest performers. One a young pannist who Cain says is very skilful, and the other, a young vocalist who Cain described as a young star and one of Laventille’s pride and joy.

Given the fact that Carlton “Zanda” Alexander is the arranger of the band, it is expected that the band will do a selection or two of his, in light of the concert format.

Massy Trinidad All Stars’ manager, Nigel Williams said the band decided to be a little different in terms of the repertoire. “It is a more varied mix. Given the change in demographics with so many young persons involved in steelband as players, to attract some young people out there, we have taken a different outlook for the event but maintaining our traditional base, he said.

Like Cain, Williams refused to state the composition of the band’s repertoire. All he would say is, the band will do about five pieces but has prepared an extended repertoire.

“Each piece will be a different genre. We are taking this event seriously and will be adding a little more umph. We are coming out to put on a show,” he said.

But it is definite that the band that will also feature a guest instrumentalist, and will play its winning Panorama song Full Xtreme. Michael Marcano, manager of bpRenegades stated that his band’s repertoire includes a medley of extracts of Jit Samaroo’s Panorama arrangements. He said Renegades will also do Maria by Carlos Santana, Be Strong by Barrington Levy and Jennifer Hudson’s And I’m Telling you that will be vocalised by new local sensation Ariel Cowie.

Marcano said the band is particularly excited about its upcoming performance. “They just can’t wait for Saturday. The fact that is not a competition is not going to change anything. Competition or no competition we always put our best foot forward.” Republic Bank Exodus’ manager, Ainsworth Mohammed said: “Exodus will be doing eight pieces. Pan in A Minor, Air On A G String, a light classic, Jordu and Flying Home, two jazz numbers, Calypso Rising with vocals by Natalie Yorke, a Latin selection Bailamos, Eddie Cumberbatch singing an aria Nessun Dorma, then we will end with The Ganges and the Nile by David Rudder.” The band will include four pieces of brass and its arranger Pelham Goddard on keyboard.

Meanwhile Len “Boogsie” Sharpe of Phase II in association with Hadco is so looking forward to tomorrow. He said: “The vibes are nice in the panyard. We practising a lot to give patrons a good show.” He revealed that guest performers are 3canal doing Talk Yuh Talk, and teenager Antonio Waithe who will sing You Raise Me Up. Also on the repertoire are Sunita, Umbayo and a Sparrow medley.

However, Boogsie said: “You know I am a shy person. Now it have an instrument I want to play.

If I get that brave on the night I will come out with it and give the patrons a nice surprise.” Newsday has been informed that in the spirit of all inclusiveness, members of Pan Trinbago executive have all been specially invited to the show.
