Rally drivers revved for battle

Gravel action begins tomorrow, attacking the 8km infamous “Bronte Stage” from 9am. There will be 10 stages, five forward and five reverse.

Sunday, the action continues on the very fast and flowing “Snake Stage” — the morning’s stage in Preysal from 9am. The afternoon will see the teams move across the highway and enjoy the gravel at the “Jack and Jill Stage” in Milton Couva from noon. Here is a look at some of the drivers and navigators that will be in action this weekend.

Continuing with the various classes and group classifications for Rally Trinidad 2017, we take a look at the battle in 4WD, a field of nine cars, split into two classes, Group A and Group N. There are three teams competing in the latter.

A past and reigning champion are going head-to-head, with an old stalwart of the club snapping at their heels.

The Trinidad and Tobago Rally Club (TTRC) Overall 2016 Champion, Stuart “Sobbie” Johnson, co-driven with Wayne Persad, a former navigator in his own right, will be looking to not only take class honours but also seek overall victory in Rally Trinidad (RT17).

His best Rally trinidad finish was second to James Betts in 2015 and with just minor service done to his Subaru Impreza WRX STI in the offseason, Stuart no doubt has his eyes on the top step this time round.

Stuart and Wayne are seeded third and all the competitors received their numbers at the Event Launch on Wednesday. Describing Saturday’s Bronte Stage as his favourite, the aim is to be in the lead heading into Sunday, a testament of survival of the fittest.

Wayne Persad has been rallying since 1993 as navigator.

His last outing was in 2003 and this event would an awakening of how the sport of rallying has evolved over the years at competition level.

TTRC Overall 2014 Champion, Craig Sumair, co-driven by Lyndon Mohammed, will be looking to shake off the ill effects of the 2016 season, despite winning a rally, with a renewed outlook and drive.

The Mitsubishi Evolution 9 has had a full engine and driveline rebuild, as well a new suspension setup, a formula for which brings with it, hopefully, rally stage wins in 2017.

Rounding out the class is long time TTRC member, Kumar “Bobby” Ramdass, co-driven by Satchin Ramlagan. With a simple refresh of the car and a gearbox change, Ramdass is rallying for the fun of the sport, with the aim to finish and bring the car home in one piece. For young Satchin, it is his second (not consecutive) season in the co-driver’s seat and Bobby looks forward to the challenge of facing the stages with a “green” one.

Anglers make big Marlins Madness catch

There was a massive tally of 79 fishes caught, and among the catch was a whopping 65 yellow-fin tuna, weighing an estimated 2,800 pounds.

Also in yesterday’s haul were 10 sailfish, two wahoo and two dolphins, while all three blue marlins which were snapped up had to be released.

On the first day of action on Wednesday, the anglers produced a modest haul of 39 fishes, including 22 yellow- fin tuna, six sailfish, four wahoo, four dolphins and three blue marlins.

Overall, a total of 18 boats, with 89 anglers, including two female and two junior participants are involved in the four-day competition, which is expected to end tomorrow.

According to the organisers, there are fisherfolk from all over the world at this event, in particular from North America and Europe.

This tournament is being held under the auspices of the Trinidad and Tobago Game Fishing Association.

Vikings in Malco’s Prison Logic

The movie tells of Malco’s alter ego Tijuana Jackson who is an ex-convict set on becoming a renowned life coach. The couple joined Malco at the end of March to shoot their part in the upcoming movie.

Their international movie debut comes after soca star Machel Montano debuted his own movie, Bazodee in 2015 in TT.

Malco is known for his roles in such films as 40-year-old Virgin, Almost Christmas, The Love Guru, Think Like a Man, Baby Mama, The Tuxedo among others.

In an interview with Newsday, Fay-Ann said they got involved with the project after, “He [Malco] put out a casting call and Ian was like he saw there was a casting call for the movie. And he [Romany] was like, ‘yeah would you all like to be in it?’ And we were like, ‘sure’. They then made the arrangements and we came up there.” Bunji and Malco have been friends for a while. His TT connection kept him aware of things happening in the West Indian community.

“Being from Trinidadian background he has always represented West Indian and their stuff in New York or LA. He has always supported whatever is happening on the West Indian circuit. He is abreast of what is happening on the music and things like that.” Bunji plays Malco’s best friend, Upgrade, and Fay-Ann plays Sexton, head of the dog and prisoners’ rehabilitation programme.

The experience taught the couple a lot about the acting world.

“We went on set like regular actors.

Did the whole filming. Had to do our part and get into character and costuming…I would say of the process it is very, very time-consuming. You literally have to do takes over and over and it takes like an hour to get one scene or particular things done. I have an even greater respect for actors.” While the acting experience was completely new for them, Fay-Ann acted before but it was her first time being in a film.

The late TV personality Marcia Henville introduced her to acting and encouraged her to continue working at it.

The couple has opened up to doing more work in the acting field.

“Yes, we will be doing more film work. Malco has already extended an invitation to us for other films he will be doing.” They have already accepted Malco’s invitation and will be ready when he calls for them to be a part of future projects.

While they will be doing more film work, eager fans might have to wait a while before they see a Viking movie on screen.

“It is something that we definitely think we should get into because the possibilities are endless.

There are so many types of movies, types of things for new talent, new energy and new vibe.” “We have not discussed nor contemplated doing our own movie because we understand the logistics behind it and we know that it is a lot of work. It costs so much when you don’t have the funding to be able to do the kind of movie that you want to.

“He [Malco] did crowdfunding [funding a project or venture by raising money from a large number of people who each contribute a relatively small amount, typically via the Internet] which is a concept we did not know

“He [Malco] did crowdfunding [funding a project or venture by raising money from a large number of people who each contribute a relatively small amount, typically via the Internet] which is a concept we did not know existed.

That is because we are still in the learning stages so for us the more important factor here is to learn as much about the industry and agencies that help get you in with the right people.” And, Bunji’s character showed his Trini roots as Malco’s best friend. Fay-Ann said: “He sounds as Trini as he could without compromising diction. When you hear both of them doing their dialogues, you hear a clear distinction in accents. Romany’s character has a heavy, prison black American-type accent as opposed to Bunji’s character which does not have that heavy, black American- type accent.” On set there was a lot of discussion about Trinidadian food, particularly roti. “There was talk about roti and stuff like that so we are hoping that the parts that mention that is kept…there is a part which is really hilarious where he keeps promising Bunji Trinidadian food as a prize for being such a great friend when he comes out of jail, which cracked the whole set up. Even funnier than that, everyone on the set was basically trying to sound Trinidadian because…

it was funny, because everyone on the set was talking about when they came to Trinidad who stay in Arima, who went Maracas beach, some people had pictures eating bake and shark…” While the couple has not ruled out doing their own movie, Fay- Ann said: “It is nice to dream and say you want to do this and do that but we prefer to gather information and understand what it will require of us…we are in stages of understanding the different concepts and approaches we can take.” The couple has also spoken to other actors in LA such as Lyriq Bent from Saw who gave them tips on acting, getting into the industry and its ills.

As for how the couple intends to approach Hollywood? “We have to be very smart. You don’t leave what you have going for something that you would like to get going, unless you know the longevity and the long-term plans.

We are approaching from a realistic aspect, of what possibilities are and what we can and cannot do.” The experience made them reflect on TT ’s own film industry.

“We are thinking that after seeing what Romany has done with getting the public to support his movie. We are thinking that our film industry should definitely get more attention and get more love and support, whether from a Government base or whatever.

We see Trinidadians like Romany who could be an integral part of helping to get the film industry started with their expertise and knowledge of directing….”

bpTT not building Angelin platform

They were upset over their removal last weekend from the Rowan EXL II rig, located off Trinidad’s east coast. The action was taken pursuant to a court order after the workers, on Wednesday last, ceased operations aboard the citing safety concerns.

All of bpTT’s platforms since Cannonball; which was commissioned in 2005, have been constructed at TOFCO. However with Juniper, the most recent bpTT platform, work stoppage due to industrial action affected its completion timeline.

This was partly why bpTT ended up constructing the jacket in the USA while the topside was built by TOFCO.

BP’s website states that after the commissioning of Cannonball, “four platforms – Mango, Cashima, Savonette and Serrette – were also locally designed and constructed with more than 80 percent of the labour performed by Trinidad and Tobago nationals.” Regarding the need for a continued supply of natural gas to TT’s energy companies, bpTT yesterday said ensuring gas supply volumes can be maintained in 2019 and beyond “is a priority”.

“While bpTT and the NGC continue to progress the completion of a gas sales agreement as a prerequisite to the sanction of Angelin, bpTT continues to pursue all options to maintain the project schedule and first gas goal of early 2019.

This is a priority to ensure that gas supply volumes can be maintained in 2019 and beyond.”

US$300,000 paid to lobbyist

Imbert, who is also acting Prime Minister, gave this answer in response to a question from Oropouche East MP Dr Roodal Moonilal in the House of Representatives.

Imbert said Cabinet decided to hire the firm and the process was done through sole selective tendering.

He said the terms of reference of the firm could be found on the US Department of Justice’s website and provided the link at which it could be found. In response to further questions from Moonilal, Imbert said Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley has spoken on this issue at length in Parliament. According to the October 2016 agreement which outlines the terms of the firm’s engagement, collaboration with the Government to deal with TT citizens recruited as foreign terrorist fighters with the Islamic State terrorist group (ISIS/ISIL); assisting Government’s efforts to diversify the economy and increasing this country’s profile amongst leading figures in the United States Senate and House of Representatives, are some of the initiatives the DC Group will be undertaking on the Government’s behalf.

Speaking in the House on March 6, Rowley said it was necessary to hire this firm because “certain behaviours” of the former People’s Partnership administration, “put TT in a very bad situation with our largest trading partner (US).”
