Prisons canteen staff welcomes audit

Newsday reported exclusively that over $2 million from prison canteens cannot be accounted for and this has resulted in a police investigation.

Prisons Commissioner Sterling Stewart has already indicated he was forced to call in the police after certain discrepancies were reported and he is now awaiting the outcome of a probe led by ASP Ajith Persad of the Port-of- Spain CID.

However, disgruntled canteen staffers yesterday said other persons within the service are responsible for collecting cash from the day’s sales and not them. “Civilian staff at the prisons canteen do not handle cash for purchasing, receiving or payment of goods for distributors.

The canteen funds are used to fund many prison events such as Annual Children Christmas Party, Annual Sport and Family day, Boat Rides all of which never seem to generate revenue,” a staffer said. Newsday was also told that for the past week canteen staffers have been subjected to embarrassing statements about missing funds and a sudden increase in prices on all items sold at the canteen. They are calling on Prisons Commissioner Stewart to meet with them to discuss the matter.

9,550 additional jobs created

.He said the latest data from the Central Statistical Office (CSO) showed there were 612,400 jobs in the second quarter of 2016 compared to the first quarter of 2016. Imbert said this does not translate into 5,400 job losses.

Explaining that the CSO does not provide information on job creation, Imbert said many persons who retire are no longer on the employment register. Later in the sitting, Tourism Minister Shamfa Cudjoe said discussions regarding the construction of a Sandals Hotel in Tobago are ongoing and no decision has been reached regarding concession agreements as yet.

Social Development Minister Cherrie Ann Crichlow Cockburn said the employment of 66 persons at the ministry’s National Poverty Reduction Coordinated Unit ended recently because the term of employment set for them under the former People’s Partnership government for them had expired.

She explained these persons were operating in an ad hoc manner and her ministry is currently undertaking a review of the former unit’s operations with the objective of making

Magistrate reprimands and discharges woman for abandoning baby ten years ago

She had abandoned the boy in 2007 in a ward at the San Fernando General Hospital (SFGH) and has not seen him since.

Yesterday, a magistrate in San Fernando in freeing Hospedales- Charles of a charge of abandoning the child, told her that she must make every effort despite the predicament, to re-establish a connection with her son.

“It is never too late to reconnect with your child,” Senior Magistrate Gloria Jasmath presiding in the San Fernando Magistrates’ court, told the mother who was 24 years old when she was charged with the offence.

It was in November 2007 when it was alleged that Hospedales- Charles took Toby who was two years old, to SFGH where she placed him on a bed at Ward 13 and left.

A nurse reported the matter to the San Fernando Police Station when she discovered Toby on November 13.

H o s p e d – ales-Charles, of Enterprise Village, Chaguanas, was arrested and charged with child abandonment.

The charge alleged that she left her child, who was an infant, at the SFGH without the protection of an adult.

When she had appeared before a magistrate, no plea was taken and she was remanded into custody.

Hospedales-Charles was eventually granted bail after the police took a decision to proceed with the case summarily.

The case was called on several occasions before different magistrates in the San Fernando Magistrates’ court and on each, attorney Ainsley Lucky had announced that he was prepared to proceed with the case.

On one occasion, he told a magistrate that Hospedales- Charles wanted to plead guilty from the inception. Last week Monday, when she appeared before Jasmath, the woman pleaded guilty and Lucky made a stirring plea in mitigation for her, saying it had been her intention for the past ten years, to so plead.

Lucky said that Hospedales-Charles was a woman who had just turned 24 and she became a mother who was not fully equipped emotionally and physically, to take care for a child.

She has lived each day in regret since, he added, because the child was taken from her and given to the father.

Jasmath adjourned the hearing for yesterday for sentencing and when Hospedales- Charles re-appeared, she was in tears. The magistrate told her that keeping in mind that ten years had passed, and that her child had grown from two years to ten years without the mother ever seeing himthere would be no useful purpose in sending the mother to jail, she added. She reprimanded and discharged Hospedales- Charles and told her that she must make every effort to get to know her child who is, the court heard, living with his father.

bmobile, Bravo support blind cricket

In partnership with bmobile, Bravo donated part proceeds from his annual birthday party – ‘47’ – to the national blind cricket team, who are the current Regional T20 and 40-over champions.

No stranger to philanthropy, Bravo also earlier contributed towards the bmobile Foundation’s Book Buddies initiative which sees employees from the company fulfilling the booklists of hundreds of underprivileged students in TT.

The Trinbago Knight Riders skipper decided to go one step further though. To show that he genuinely supported their cause, Bravo visited the blind cricketers during one of their practice sessions at the Edinburgh Ground in Chaguanas, where he got to experience what it was like to play cricket without the ability of sight. It’s no simple task as he discovered, but the visit was a fulfilling one, that brought greater appreciation for their efforts.

“First of all, it’s great for me to be here along with my partner bmobile to do something special for the team,” said Bravo. “For me, putting on the blackout glasses which blocks your vision, took a while for me to adjust, I faced about 14 deliveries and was only able to hit about three or four, so it’s very challenging,” he said on the experience of batting blind.

“I have read about them (the team) and seen some clippings in the newspaper or on TV but I have never really experienced them play first-hand like I did this morning, so hats off to them and the coaching staff, the people who sacrifice their time and talent to be with them.” The bmobile Foundation has also supported the national blind cricket team for over five years by assisting them with their annual training requirements. TSTT’s VP Marketing, Camille Campbell, emphasised the company’s commitment to supporting Bravo on such initiatives. “Dwayne has always shown a keen and genuine interest in giving back to those less privileged in our society and we are here to support him on that fully,” said Campbell.

“The goal of the bmobile Foundation is to help empower the citizens of TT through youth, sport, education and health and we see such partnerships and initiatives as key to achieving that goal. We sincerely appreciate his desire to give back and willingness to partner with us as we also work towards achieving the Foundation’s goals.” The players clearly enjoyed the visit, sizing Bravo up, engaging in a little ‘picong’, making requests for other players and of course, finishing up the encounter by singing Bravo’s famous hit song, ‘Champion’, and even showing off their dance moves.

Bravo assured the team that he would be back with a few more friends, having thoroughly enjoyed the experience, and encouraged the players to support each other.

Also appreciative of Bravo’s presence was team coach, Harilal Kissoon. Kissoon thanked Bravo and bmobile for their presence.

He also noted that it has been bmobile’s support, which has been forthcoming for over five years now, that has ensured the team’s dominance at the regional level.

Ramkissoon makes big splash in Canada

The 4th year Mathematics student at the University of Waterloo won one gold, two silver and a bronze while setting a number of school records and threatening the national mark in the 200 metre breaststroke.

The meet, which was contested in a 25 metre pool, saw Ramkissoon defending his title in the 100 metre breaststroke.

In the final of that event, he was closely marked by Eli Wall of Toronto but pulled away for the victory in 1:00.41, just off his Championship record of 1:00.18.

Wall took the silver in 1:00.94. Ramkissoon has medalled the last four years in the event, taking bronze in 2015 and silver in 2014. That ranks Ramkissoon as the 2nd fastest swimmer in the Canadian College rankings heading to the U Sport Championships (Canadian College Championships) being held from February 24- 26.

In the 50 metre breaststroke, Ramkissoon set a new school record in the morning heats of 28.01. In a very tight final, he was pipped at the wall by Wall whose 28.11 bettered his time of 28.18.

In the 200 metre breaststroke, Ramkissoon moved from 6th place in 2016 to earn the bronze this year. The medal was unsure up to the last 50 metres but Ramkissoon unleashed the fastest last 50 metres of 34.13 to stop the clock in a time of 2:15.52. That time puts the 2012 national record of 2:15.15 by Abraham McLeod on notice to be lowered.

The 200 freestyle relay saw the TT swimmer earning silver in a new school record. The Warriors team of Alex Lokjo (23.78), Danyon Chu (22.83), Ramkissoon (23.07) and Jamaican Aidan Chow (22.99) set a new Waterloo standard of 1:32.67.

Speaking after the Championshipsm Ramkissoon said: “I thought the 100 was decent, could’ve been better technically but I have another shot at it in U Sports in two weeks.

Came second in the 50, race was technically very off so I have some stuff to work on heading into U Sports.”

Williams fires Central into Pro Bowl final

Williams made a big save and on the very next kick, scored the winner after eight rounds to send his team into the final after a goalless draw.

In the other semifinal, a second-half hat-trick by Jamille Boatswain inspired Defence Force to a 4-0 win over Police FC at the very same Couva venue.

Defence Force and Central FC, who were recently crowned Digicel Pro League champions for a third consecutive time, will tackle each other in the season-ending $100,000 “Winner Takes All” Pro Bowl title-match on Sunday from 6pm at the Ato Boldon Stadium.

The 23-year-old Boatswain, who joined the Army/Coast Guard combination during the January transfer window from Point Fortin Civic, broke the deadlock on the hour mark when he ran unchallenged at the back post to head powerfully past Police goalie Adrian Foncette off a Marvin Jones cross.

Foncette stood beaten for a second time in the 68th-minute when inform midfielder Hashim Arcia unleashed a 25- yard free-kick to find the back of the Police net.

There was little the Police custodian could do to stop a 25-yard rocket from Boatswain in the 78th-minute. He completed his hat-trick with his 14th goal this season with a composed finish past Foncette.

It was a refreshing finish to Sunday night for fans who earlier witnessed a stalemate after 90 minutes between Central FC and Club Sando.

Sando had the chance to celebrate their first ever win against Central but Trevin Latapy thumped his penalty aimlessly high.

It was the start of the end for Sando with Kevon Piper and Leslie Joel Russell joining Latapy in entirely missing the target and Shaquille Holder denied by Jan-Michael Williams.

Jan, adding insult to injury, stepped up and scored the winning kick but quickly paused celebrations to console his opposite number.

Jan estimates it was his first penalty kick in over 10 years.

Smith, SSFL express sadness over Adams’ death

Adams was not only a member of the Signal Hill family, but was a key member of the Trinidad and Tobago Girls Under- 15 team which participated at the CONCACAF Under 15 Women’s Championship at Disney, Orlando last year. The teen was found murdered on Saturday morning in Courland, Tobago.

“We all know that Ms Adams had a bright future in football. She was shortlisted to be a member of the Girls’ Under 17 team, at a time when Women’s football is moving to greater heights. We are still at a loss as to how and why her life was cut short at 15. We would never know how far Ms Adams would have gone if her life was not taken away so callously,” Azaad Mohammed-Khan, SSFL General Secreatry, said.

Sports Minister Darryl SmMith also extended his sympathy to Adams’ family.

“As a father of three daughters, I cannot imagine the grief Abiela’s family must be going through and I pray for their healing and in the long term, for justice. Pour all your sorrow into supporting each other, as teammates do on the field of play. As the Minister responsible for Sport, I will continue to advocate for and create opportunities for the inclusion and full participation of young persons, particularly women and girls in sport, as Abiela was in both football and cricket. Trinidad and Tobago, we all need to protect our women and girls. The current state of affairs cannot continue,” he said.

Hillview look to rebound against ‘Pres’

In the third round, Hillview suffered a three-wicket defeat to Carapichaima East at Honeymoon Park in El Dorado which saw them slip to third in the standings. Presentation are coming off a “losing draw” against new leaders and defending champions Fatima. With only four rounds of competition left (including today), Hillview will be hoping for a victory to stay in contention for the title.

Yesterday, Hillview coach Richard Kelly said, “we had a meeting with the team and expressed the importance of playing like a team. If we don’t do that tomorrow, then we will be in a lot of trouble.” Kelly is calling for more application from his batsmen today after Hillview fell for 159 in 37.5 overs batting first against Carapichaima East. “We’re thinking positively, we’re hoping we could go out there and get the job done.

The application in the batting was not of the best (against Carapichaima East). We played exceptionally well against Barrackpore, and I was hoping that we would have been doing the same thing against Carapichaima East, but that did not work out as we would have liked.” In other matches today, Fatima will play sixth-placed Shiva Boys Hindu at the Congo Village Recreation Ground in Debe, while fifth-placed Naparima will face last placed Trinity College East at Naparima Ground, Lewis Street, San Fernando.

In the last match of the round, seventh placed Carapichaima East battles fourth placed Barrackpore West at the Beaucarro Recreation Ground in Freeport.
