Jody Stanislaus builds on makeup foundation

“I have always loved doing makeup. I experimented a lot with makeup when I was a teenager,” the self-taught artist tells WMN.

“Now I do Carnival, bridal, and graduation party makeup and children’s face painting.” But for all the years the 30-year-old has been dabbling in makeup application, it was only a few years ago that she began seeing her natural talent as more than just a hobby. “It was only about six years ago I really started taking my talent seriously.” For as long as she can remember Jody has been using her own face as her canvas, turning its surface and every contour into a masterpiece with every application. Little did she know that she was using it as the foundation (no pun intended) for the start of something fun and lucrative.

“Makeup application is a passion that comes naturally to me, so I never, ever had to go get my makeup done by anyone. I did it myself.” Today, she extends her services to new canvases and gets paid for it. “I started doing Carnival makeup and children’s face painting about three years ago, and I absolutely love it.” Her patient dedication to turning every look for any occasion into one of perfection attests to this.

And while natural talent makes for a good foundation, keeping abreast of new trends and techniques plays a major role in any business, especially in the fashion industry. However, that does not mean that one has to spend years in the beauty school classroom in order to do that.

“My major is in Biochemistry from Hunter College in New York. (CUNY),” Jody reveals to WMN. But her passion for makeup application pushes her to educate herself on all aspects of makeup, using the world of information that is at her disposal to perfect her craft – books, magazines, online resources, constant practice, name it and she does it.

So with all the love and care that she puts into her work will there be a Jody Stanislaus line of makeup in the not so distant future? “There are no immediate plans per se, but what girl doesn’t dream of her own line of makeup?” she chuckles.
