Man attempts suicide at police station

POLICE saved the life of a 24-year-old prisoner who tried to hang himself from the bars of a jail-cell at the Cedros Police Station, two hours after he was arrested for possession of arms and ammunition, on Sunday.

The 24-year-old man, of Syphoo Trace, Granville, was expected to appear before a Point Fortin magistrate yesterday charged with possession of a firearm, possession of ammunition and possession of marijuana. Instead, he is now warded under police guard, in serious condition at the San Fernando General Hospital. Police reports stated around 11 am, a party of policemen executed a search warrant at the suspect’s home and found a .38 revolver, a quantity of ammunition and a small amount of marijuana. The suspect was arrested and taken to the Cedros Police Station where he was to be charged with the offences. But less than two hours later, around 1 pm, PC Ramkissoon heard a noise in the cell area and on checking, he saw the barebacked suspect hanging from his jersey, which was tied around his neck and secured to the steel door of the cell. ASP Gopiechand Ganga is spearheading investigations.
