Teachers only at ‘Tranquil’
The Tranquility Secondary School yesterday reopened but only to teachers.
This was revealed by a source at the Ministry of Education, who was unable to say when students would return to the school, or when classes would resume. Following violent clashes between students of Tranquility and St Mary’s College (CIC) last week, a decision was taken by the Ministry of Education to shut down the school until more stringent measures could be put in place to deal with some of the indiscipline in the school and the high rate of teacher absenteeism.
When Newsday contacted the Trinidad and Tobago Unified Teachers’ Association, treasurer Krishnarine Bassaw said he was not sure if the school had reopened. However, he revealed the Education Ministry had agreed to some short-term measures which include increased security guards on the compound, raising the wall on the western side of the school, opening the southern gate and controlling the vendors on the sidewalk.
