Firearms Act amendment for the Senate today

GOVERNMENT will seek to amend the Firearms Act at today’s sitting of the Senate.

According to the Order Paper, the first Bill up for consideration is an Act to amend the Firearms Act. The Bill which is in its Second Reading, is to be taken to the Upper House by Minister of National Security, Martin Joseph. It will be his first presentation to the House in his new capacity as National Security Minister, and it comes in the wake of the spiralling murder rate.

Other Bills to be laid in the House include one to amend the Constitution of Trinidad and Tobago as well as an another to implement establishing the Cari-bbean Court of Justice. Both Bills will be tabled by the Attorney General, John Jeremie. Jeremie is also due to table Bills to amend the Summary Courts Act, the Mutual Assistance in Criminal Matters Act and another to amend the Commissions of Inquiry Act.

The Attorney General’s presentation will also extend to Bills pertaining to the provision for the efficient management of the Police Service, to consolidate, amend and revise the law relating to the Police Service and to establish an independent body to investigate criminal offences involving police officers, police corruption and serious police misconduct. An Act to amend the Constitution by providing for the establishing of a Police Mana-gement Authority is also on the Order paper.
