UNC claims 200 kidnappings in TT

THE OPPOSITION UNC on Tuesday accused Prime Minister Patrick Manning, National Security Minister Martin Joseph and the Police Service of trying to conceal from the population that there were over 200 kidnappings in Trinidad and Tobago for 2003. In a statement, the UNC claimed these three players are “tactically attempting to convince the public that the state of kidnappings is not as serious as it is.” Describing kidnapping as “the unlawful abduction and detention of an individual against their will,” the Opposition charged: “Based on this, the number for the year is over 200, which can be confirmed by the police. Last year it was 227.

Furthermore, they are also shrewdly stating that of the 43 kidnappings for ransom, ten persons have been arrested for false kidnappings. This does not mean that the ten are false, but that ten people have been arrested for the offence, since there have only been less than five false kidnappings out of the 200 reported to the police, in fact it is only three.”
