Englishman posts $.2M bail

A VISITING English resident was yesterday granted bail in the sum of $200,000 when he appeared before a Port-of-Spain magistrate, charged with causing the deaths of two persons by dangerous driving. Bail was set at $100,000 for the death of each person. Miles O’Connor, 23, of 62 Whitney Hertfordshire, England, appeared before Magistrate Betsy-Ann Lambert-Peterson at the Port-of-Spain Magistrates’ First Court to answer the charge. He was represented by attorneys Ravi Rajcoomar and Andrew Des Vignes.   O’Connor was driving one of the vehicles involved in a three-vehicle smash-up on the Priority Bus Route in the vicinity of the Morvant intersection on Christmas Day in which 38-year-old Dhanmatie Harrilal of Carapichaima and 38-year-old visiting Venezuelan Jose Alexis Gonzales, occupants of a maxi-taxi heading west along the PBR were killed.  O’Connor was arrested and charged yesterday by Cpl Carol Cox-Hickson of the Barataria Police Station.
  
Police prosecutor Cpl Alexander asked that O’Connor surrender his passport to the court and Lambert-Peterson ordered that it be handed over to the prosecutor immediately. Rajcoomar requested that the matter be adjourned to an early date so that it could be completed in order for his client to be able to leave for England on his scheduled flight on January 10. O’Connor, who is staying with a relative at Greenview Gardens, Saddle Road, Santa Cruz, will re-appear in court on January 8.
