Martha heads to Brazil

SHE STANDS at six feet tall (without heels) and has some of the best teeth.  She’s got beauty, brains and a ticket to Brazil.  She is 24-year-old Martha-Jillyan Arthur. This young librarian’s incredible sense of style and fashion speak for itself.  Arthur, who is presently pursuing her degree in sociology and management, is TT’s representative for the “Senorita Panamericana” beauty pageant title.  The pageant will take place in Sao Paulo, Brazil on Tuesday and is being held in commemoration of the 450th Anniversary of the City of Sao Paulo.  The pageant aims to pay homage to countries of the Americas and all immigrants who once built a life in Sao Paulo.

Arthur who was the second runner-up in Miss TT World says she is very excited and honoured to be representing her country at such an event.  The D’Abadie beauty explained that delegates are expected to model swimwear, national wear and evening gowns.  Her swimwear has been sponsored by Inn Collection, her evening gown designed by Pete Primus and her national costume by Big Mike from the band Legends. Arthur revealed that she has left the designing up to the designers and really isn’t informed as to what they are creating.  She claims, however, she is certain “they will be nothing short of winning pieces, I have full confidence in my designers and I know they are very capable.” Arthur who loves modelling and interior design says “modelling is really something I enjoy, I love fashion and I love picking out accessories.  The designing however is my passion, some of my friends have been brave enough to let me into their homes and I have not disappointed.”

Asked about her Miss TT World experience Arthur said she has won quite a number of friends and she has no regrets.  “Like everything else, there are the ups and downs, advantages and disadvantages, but all a learning experience.” Arthur’s favourite colour is black, “I know a lot of people would be upset with me for saying that…I have like 50 black pieces or more and I just love black.  My favourite general colour however, is green, I love emerald green especially.” Her greatest fear is losing her family. “We are so closely knit, it would be very difficult to imagine life without them…I really love my family,”  She is the eldest of four children, two sisters and a brother. She said family is the cornerstone to society and many of the problems being experienced today is as a result of broken homes. Arthur cites Nelson Mandela as one of her mentors.

“I really admire him for what he has done and what he continues to do today.  It is hard for me to zero in on any one mentor because there is much I admire in different people.  We all have strengths and weaknesses and as such I admire the strengths in many.” Her dream is to accomplish everything she desires. Arthur thanked all her friends, family and her significant other for all their. “Thanks so much for your support. I always say ‘you know your true friends when you are at your lowest’ and I know mine…I love you all.”
