US Govt investigating Trinis’ detention

THE UNITED STATES government yesterday said the circumstances surrounding the detention of three Trinidadian women in New York over the weekend are currently being investigated.

Public Affairs Officer at the US Embassy in Port-of-Spain, Stacie Rose-Blass, told Newsday that the incident is “an ongoing immigration issue” and investigations are continuing. She said the US Embassy could not publicly comment at this time and referred all questions to the US Department of Homeland Security. Attempts to contact officials at the Department of Homeland Security for comment were unsuccessful.

Kelly Jobity of Laventille, Angela Austin of Diego Martin and Nasmar Mohammed of San Fernando were detained by US Immigration Officers at John F Kennedy International Airport over the weekend and sent back to Trinidad on Monday. The trio had their visas cancelled by US authorities while Jobity and Mohammed were reportedly shackled from the moment of their arrival to Monday, when they were sent home.
