Schoolboy charged with assaulting cop
A Sangre Grande schoolboy on Friday appeared in court charged with assaulting a police officer. According to reports, shortly after school on Wednesday, while standing in the Sangre Grande junction, Constable Wesley Sylvester had cause to speak to an 18-year-old student of the Arima Senior comprehensive school about his behaviour. The youth, a 17-year-old student of the Sangre Grande Educational and Sport College at Toco Main Road became infuriated about how the officer was speaking to his friend, and held the cop’s neck in an arm lock. The shocked officer, with the assistance of another officer nearby, managed to pull the teen off and took him to the Sangre Grande Police Station. He was charged with assaulting the officer.
When he appeared before Magistrate Sherill Ann Blake, he pleaded not guilty and was placed on $5,000 bail. The matter was adjourned to March. Ag Cpl Skeete of the Sangre Grande police laid the charge. In an unrelated matter, four students of the Mt Hope Junior Secondary School and the Caribbean Union College, Maracas were held and warned for violence.
