Diplomatic coke accused in court

Only one of the two accused charged with possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking, after investigations into a cocaine bust at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, appeared before a Port-of-Spain magistrate yesterday. As the matter was called, Kurt Alexis was called before Senior Magistrate Lianne Lee Kin in the Port-of-Spain Fourth C Court, but there were no questions raised about the whereabouts of Alexis’ co-accused. Both men were each granted bail last week in the sum of $100,000. They were also ordered to surrender their passports to the courts.

However, when Alexis stood before Lee Kim yesterday, the magistrate raised questions about discrepancies about the individual who posted his bail. Lee Kim addressed the bailor who was present for the proceeding, outlining certain things she found questionable. Not being able to clarify the matter at that time, the matter was adjourned to June 3. Kurt Alexis of Forest Avenue, Cocoyea Village, San Fernando, and Micha Smith of Laventille Extension Road in Morvant are charged with possession of over two kilos of cocaine. The men were arrested about two weeks ago at 1 Queen’s Park West, Port-of-Spain, by Insp Alexis of the Organised Crime and Narcotics Unit.
