Sat: Don’t expect Hindus in URP
Do not expect to see Hindus doing Unemployment Relief Programme (URP) jobs, instead they would be educating themselves to obtain the higher level better paying jobs in the country. This was one of the main views expressed yesterday by head of the President of the Sanatan Dharma Maha Sabha (SDMA), Sat Maraj. He was at the time addressing a gathering at the Craignish Shiv Mandir in Princes Town, which was part of the beginning of celebrations of the 159th anniversary Celebrations of Indian Arrival Day. Maraj criticised what he perceived as the dependency syndrome created by the URP and warned against it.
He urged the gathering of devout Hindus, “we must be well educated to take the top jobs in the land.” He also criticised what he saw as in equity in fundings to Carnival organisations and Indian cultural organisations. He said that last Carnival government gave some $2.4 m to cultural groups of which Indian cultural groups received $100,000. He added that one steelband in South received as much as $300,000.
