NUGFW (South) holds biennial elections

THE southern division of the National Union of Government and Federated Workers (NUGFW) held its biennial elections on Saturday at Paradise Pastures, San Fernando where a slate of  eight candidates being led by new president Mazack Ali, was elected unopposed.  Following the voting by 980 individuals, which took place between 12 pm and 2 pm, the new executive was installed. Members of the new executive include Mazack Ali (president), Premchand Sookhoo (vice-president), Gary Dickson (secretary), Steve Mitchell (assistant secretary), Raymond Badri (education secretary), Franklyn Gardener (safety and environment secretary), Hardeo Deonath (grievance secretary) and Harry Sutherland (financial secretary).

There are also five General Council  representatives and 16 committee members. New president Mazack Ali previously served as secretary and held that position for ten out of the 27 years he has been with the Union. He is also second vice-president of the union. After being elected, Ali said his main concerns would be  pension reforms, education and the dissemination of information to workers and members. He said once representatives were knowlegeable of the way the system worked and knew their rights, the organisation would be better equipped to deal with whatever issues and problems encountered and also bring about positive changes. The NUGFW has a membership of approximately 35,000 with some 8,000 coming from the southern division which is the largest of all.
