Archbishop Gilbert prays for media

ROMAN CATHOLIC Archbishop Edward Gilbert yesterday lifted up local journalists to the Lord during Corpus Christi Mass at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. Gilbert told the massive congregation to pray for Trinidad and Tobago’s journalists as they strive to bring the truth to ordinary citizens. He said the media must keep its responsibility to the common good at the forefront of all of its activities and its members should be guided by sound ethics and principles at all times.

The Archbishop also prayed for TT’s leaders and asked God to guide them in their efforts to alleviate all of society’s ills, especially poverty and crime. Hundreds of persons braved the withering heat to participate in the subsequent procession along Independence Square. Among them were parents, some cradling infants in their arms, young people and senior citizens. The Roman Catholic faithful in Sangre Grande, headed by Father Michael Pereira, also engaged in Corpus Christi celebrations while in the south, Fr Clyde Harvey was the celebrant in Mass yesterday morning.

According to Archbishop Gilbert, Corpus Christi provides the church with an opportunity to reflect on various aspects of the Eucharistic faith. Corpus Christi is celebrated every year to honour the sacrifice Jesus Christ, the Son of God, made for the redemption of souls from sin. It is deemed an important part of the Roman Catholic calendar.
