293 tickets issued in islandwide traffic exercise

293 tickets were issued to errant motorists during an islandwide traffic exercise carried out in all police divisions on Thursday. A breakdown of the figures revealed that in Port-of-Spain 91 tickets were issued, Northern 68, Central Highway Patrol Central, 51, Southern, 73, and Eastern 10. 120 persons were charged with speeding. Other offences detected during the exercise included driving with defective tyres, overcrowding, having unsecured load, driving without permits and forged permits. During a similar exercise carried out on Indian Arrival Day 779 tickets were issued. The exercise was coordinated by ACP Mobile Nazamul Hosein and supervised by Supt Protain, and ASP Bernard.

It started at 6 am and ended at 6 pm. Yesterday, ACP Hosein told Newsday that based on the figures, motorists are continuing to flout the traffic laws. “We have patrols everywhere and we are targetting areas where fatalities occur,” said ACP Hosein. He pointed out that patrols have been doubled in specific areas and efforts have been intensified in a bid to deal with the total breakdown of adhering to traffic laws. ACP Hosein revealed that traffic officers will continue to educate the public and deal with the problems which take place on the roads. He issued a stern warning to motorists to obey the traffic laws or face prosecution.
