Pitbulls kill granny, 77
A 77-year-old Longdenville woman succumbed to injuries on Wednesday night after being attacked by her neighbour’s two ferocious pitbulls. Wrenching in pain from injuries caused by the dogs’ attack, Chandrawattie Beera died at around 9.30 pm at the Port-of-Spain General Hospital. According to reports, Beera was tending to her kitchen garden at the back of her Dam Road home in Longdenville at around 3 pm, when she was attacked by the dogs. After the intervention of residents, she was rushed to the Chaguanas Health Facility and later transferred to the Port-of-Spain General Hospital, where she later died. One dog was chopped and killed by the residents, while the other was taken away after it ran into a neighbour’s yard. When Newsday visited the home, a traumatised family refused to speak, but area residents told Newsday they have been warning the owner for a long time about the dogs, and this incident was just waiting to happen.
“That dog always rushing people and up to recently bite and killed two dogs in the area,” Cornelius Chester said. “And when we tell the owner, he would only say it is for his protection against bandits. “Now we want to know if the old lady is a bandit.” Recalling the situation, Keron Lett, alias Guppy, another resident who assisted in rescuing the old lady from the dogs, told Newsday, “We were sitting next door when I heard loud crying and screaming. At first we thought it was a dog attacking a cat, so I called my friend to hear. “Then someone shouted it was the dogs attacking the woman, so together with the other fella we climbed the gate and started beating the dogs, which were tearing up the woman behind the house. “We beat them with everything we had, wood, iron, fork, cutlass, eventually I chopped one of the dogs and my friend stabbed it with a fork, and that was how that dog stopped. “The other dog then ran off. I attempted to chase it, but was stopped. “By this time, the woman, whose nose, right hand, right ear and scalp were ripped out, was screaming for us to put her inside, which we did.” Efforts to speak to the alleged owner of the dogs proved futile.
