DPP waiting for killer pitbull report

A police report on the pitbull attack in Longdenville which claimed the life of a 77-year-old woman will be forwarded to Director of Public Prosecutions Geoffrey Henderson shortly. Officers of Central Division and homicide officers returned to Longdenville on Friday and carried out a detailed probe into the circumstances which led to the death of Chandrawattie Beera. The elderly woman was washing dishes at the back of her home last Wednesday when she was mauled by two pitbulls which belonged to her neighbour.

The dogs reportedly jumped over a wall belonging to the owner and attacked Beera. She was bitten on her right arm, her left arm was ripped off and parts of her scalp were also bitten off. One of the dogs was killed by a villager, while the owner of the dogs managed to get the other dog out of the area. Beera died at around 9.30 pm on Wednesday night and was cremated on Friday. Police investigators told Newsday they interviewed several persons to find out if the dogs had been properly secured.

They also sought to find out what security arrangements were put in place to ensure that the dogs were secured. The owner of the dogs was interviewed as well as relatives of Beera. Residents of Longdenville are calling on Government and Opposition to ensure that the Dangerous Dogs Act is proclaimed. The Act, which was the brainchild of former attorney general Ramesh Lawrence Maharaj, was passed in Parliament, but never proclaimed.
