COPS stop illegal HCU march

In an ironic twist, violence erupted yesterday when Hindu Credit Union (HCU) President, Harry Harnarine was arrested for leading an illegal motorcade and march against crime at the Piarco International Airport yesterday. The motorcade which involved hundreds of people, started at the Freeport Convention Centre and proceeded to the airport. Harnarine  had announced on Saturday during an anti-crime rally at the Convention Centre that he and his supporters would shut down the airport in an attempt to draw attention to the escalating crime  situation. However, the bold march came to an abrupt end when Ag Commissioner of Police Trevor Paul and several officers attempted to prevent the group from entering the airport.

The officers formed a barricade of police and police vehicles at the entrance to the airport but the protesters refused to be stopped as they attempted to force their way through the barricade. At this point Ag CoP Paul ordered Harnarine’s arrest, causing several altercations between police officers and the now irate marchers. Persons who before were peacefully marching and clapping, began rocking an E-999 vehicle from side to side as Harnarine and three others were pushed into the back seat. In the absence of their leader the gathering continued to force its way into the airport. Supporters were finally persuaded by a member of the HCU to leave the airport to prevent any further arrests. They then headed for the Five Rivers Police Station.

According to Ag CoP Paul, “I expected  the people to behave in an orderly manner. Citizens have rights but they must realise that they must uphold the law.” He said that he was unaware of any permission being granted to the HCU for the motorcade and march and added that he was unwilling to tolerate any lawlessness. Up to late yesterday evening HCU supporters surrounded the Five Rivers Police Station awaiting word on the status of their leader from HCU legal representatives who were in negotiations with the arresting officers.
