Murder accused wants to see children

MORE THAN a year after a 38-year-old community worker was charged with the murder of Tobago schoolteacher Evelyn James, the preliminary inquiry cannot proceed as the accused has been unable to get a court-appointed attorney. That was the situation in the Scarborough First Court on Monday, when Jeffrey Guy of Bethel reappeared before senior Magis-trate Annette McKenzie on a charge of mur-dering James at the Montgomery Govern-ment Primary School on February 19, 2003.

The accused said he had made three applications for Legal Aid but had so far been unsuccessful in securing an attorney. The magistrate explained that she had contacted the Legal Aid Authority and was told all efforts would be made to get representation for Guy. Meantime, Guy told the court yesterday was his birthday and the “best birthday gift” would be for him to see his two children. The magistrate explained: “I have no jurisdiction over the Prisons.” Guy, in turn, responded: “That was my wish. I don’t want you to go beyond your responsibilities.”
