Boy on swing died of broken neck
The mother of 12-year-old Renaldo Ganoo, the boy who died after falling from a swing adjacent to his home on Tuesday afternoon, was inconsolable yesterday after viewing her son’s body at the Port-of-Spain mortuary. An autopsy at Port-of-Spain General Hospital yesterday revealed that Ganoo died from a fractured neck. He is also believed to have choked on his tongue. Caroline Ganoo said almost half an hour before the tragic death on Tuesday, she spoke to her son from her cell phone and he told her that he was waiting for her by the swing, the same swing which caused her only son’s death. Caroline, an employee of Holiday Foods Ltd and her husband Kissoon, recently bought a house in Cunupia, and they were putting the final touches to their home.
Ganoo, who passed his SEA for Chaguanas Junior Secondary School, was a member of the Cunupia Police Youth Club, and his mother is the public relations officer. Chrissann Crooks, president of the Cunupia Police Youth Club, said Renaldo was well loved by everyone who knew him. She said his nickname was “Scoobie,” and he was involved in all the activities of the youth club. “Renaldo had a bright future and had the potential of achieving anything he put his mind to,” Crooks said. An eyewitness to the freak accident told Newsday the swing was thrown into bushes by the owners. The children of the area placed the swing in a carpark and were enjoying themselves on Tuesday afternoon, when tragedy struck. He will be cremated tomorrow after a church service at the Cunupia Church. PC Balkissoon of the Cunupia Police Station is investigating.
