Ganja found in city prison
A quantity of marijuana was discovered in a cell at the Port-of-Spain prison on Tuesday night. Reports revealed that around 8 pm, prison officers were carrying out routine checks in the cell blocks, when they saw a container with a quantity of marijuana inside a cell. The Port-of-Spain CID was contacted and a party of officers led by acting Snr Supt Errol Denoon and Sgt Jawahir went to the prison. Prison officers and prisoners were interviewed and the marijuana seized.
Police returned to the prison yesterday and searched other cell blocks for drugs, but none was found. Police were up to late yesterday trying to determine the source of the drugs and who was responsible for bringing it into the prison. Several prisoners reportedly told police they purchase drugs from prison officers at a very high price. The money is paid by relatives of the prisoners. Prisons Commissioner Carlos Mchoney was unavailable for comment yesterday, but prison officers denied claims that they were involved in drug trafficking inside the prisons. They were unable to say how the drugs ended up in the cell block. A report on the drug find was submitted to the prisons commissioner yesterday.
