Santa Cruz man to stand trial for murder
A 23-year-old man was yesterday committed to stand trial for the murder of a 14-year-old boy who was shot dead last year. Appearing before Chief Magistrate Sherman Mc Nicolls was Damien Mc Millan of Santa Cruz. He is accused of murdering Maurice Mota of St James on October 12, 2003. The ruling followed the evidence of 25 witnesses called by State prosecutor Natasha George. Reports stated that at about 2.30 am on the date, both the accused and the victim were liming at Jazzy’s Pub in St James, when they got into an argument over a woman.
Reports are that the woman was dancing with both the deceased and the accused. After the argument, the accused left and went downstairs the pub, returning shortly after with a firearm. The assailant then shot Mota to the back of the head while he was sitting on a chair in the verandah area of the pub. Mota died on the spot, while the gunman hurriedly left the scene. Mc Millan was informed by the Chief Magistrate that enough evidence was found against him to stand trial at the next sitting of the Assizes.
