3 critical after Arima crash

THREE persons are now in critical condition at the Port-of-Spain General Hospital, while a father and daughter were discharged with minor injuries following a three-car smash-up at the Omera Road and Churchill Roosevelt Highway intersection, Arima, yesterday. Discharged were Vijay Outin and his daughter Kashima of Curepe, while warded were his teacher John Campbell and two unnamed women.

According to reports, around 1.30 pm, Outin and his daughter were proceeding west in his Prado jeep along the highway, when a Daewoo motorcar driven by Campbell crossed the intersection and collided with the on-coming vehicle. This caused the car to spin several times and came into contact with another car driven by Corporal Johnny King, of the Arouca police who was waiting on the green light to cross the highway. Passing motorists quickly rushed to the scene and pulled the occupants out. They were all rushed to the Arima District Health facility where the father and daughter were treated and discharged. Campbell, who had to be cut out from behind the steering wheel, and his two unnamed passengers, were later transferred to the PoSGH. He was suffering from head injuries, one of the women suffered internal injuries, and the second suffered two broken legs. All are listed in critical conditions.

A still shocked Cpl King told Newsday, “I was sitting at the intersection waiting to cross and at the same time thinking should a car get away while traveling west I would be safe since it would hit one of the utility poles before reaching me. Next thing I heard bang and this car run into me. The problem there is sheer speed, every body wants to go fast.”
Arima police are investigating.
