$40M Diego Highway extension begins
WORKS and Transport Minister Franklyn Khan yesterday expressed satisfaction as work began on the Diego Martin Highway extension. Khan told Newsday the project involved work on approximately 1.6 kilometres of highway from Sierra Leone Road to Wendy Fitzwilliam Boulevard in Diamond Vale, and is expected to be completed within a nine to 12-month period, at a total cost of $40 million.
The Diego Martin Highway extension is one of several projects being carried out under the National Highways Programme. Asked if there were any complaints from residents or business people in the area about the project, Khan disclosed there were some concerns, but these have been resolved. Main contractor is Jusamco Pavers Ltd, a member of the Junior Sammy Group of Companies. Headley Smith, Diego Martin Regional Corpora-tion’s chief executive officer, said he was pleased to know that work had started on the highway. Smith recalled the project was initiated in March 2002. Smith said no complaints had been made to the corporation between 2002 and the present time. He added he was unaware if any complaints about the project were made prior to March 2002.
