Cops hold relative of Deosaran in kidnapping

CENTRAL Division police have reportedly detained a close male relative of freed kidnap victim Rodney Deosaran, in connection with the kidnapping. In addition, police sources said a search was carried out on Sunday at the home of Deosaran’s relatives. Police sources told Newsday a team of officers headed by Acting Insp Salandy and including detective Sgt Ajith Persad, executed a search warrant at the home of Deosaran’s relatives. Deosaran, 28, who was kidnapped on July 4 while liming at the home of his wife’s parents, was released around 3 am on Sunday at Calcutta Road in Freeport — a stone’s throw away from his family’s sprawling mansion at Old Southern Main Road, Carapichaima. Meanwhile, president of the Media Association of Trinidad and Tobago (MATT) John Victor has condemned as “reprehensible” threats by armed security guards at the home of Deosaran’s father against members of the media.

In light of the threats by a security guard, who openly brandished a silver pistol at reporters and cameramen, Victor was now calling on Commis-sioner of Police Trevor Paul to launch an investigation into the matter. Victor said members of the media, both audio/visual and print, were carrying out their legitimate duties when they were verbally abused and threatened by the guard. After the release of Deosaran on Sunday, two television cameramen and reporters attempted to visit the Deosaran residence on assignment. They were outside the premises when they were accosted by a security guard who pulled his gun and began pointing it in their faces, demanding that they leave. All media personnel, at the time, were on the public road both at the Deosaran residence and at the home of Deosaran’s in-laws at Orange Field Road in Cara-pichaima. Victor said a letter would be sent to Paul, requesting the necessary investigations into the threats against the media.
