Guyanese man kills wife and self

AFTER months of quarrelling over a suspected outside affair, a Guyanese immigrant killed his wife and then himself. Samuel George, 34, a mason by trade, almost decapitated his 35-year-old common law wife Maxine Dion Smith, a hot dog vendor. He then drank a bottle of weedicide. After being alerted by the woman’s daughter, the police found the two bodies, the woman on the floor in a pool of blood and the man on the bed.

At around 5.30 am yesterday the woman’s daughter Jenelle Kerr, 17, of John John, aware of the couple’s frequent arguments, visited the couple’s upper Hillview Road, Sixth Avenue, Malick home, knocked on the front door and got no response. She left and returned around midday. Getting no response again, she contacted the Morvant police, who broke down the door and made the startling discovery. When Newsday visited the area, residents claimed they did not know anything about the couple who had moved into the area two months ago, but were accustomed to them walking down the road and cursing each other with him accusing the woman of “horning him.”

Next door neighbour Eugenia Trim told Newsday, “Between 8 pm and 9 pm I was hearing quarreling and screaming, I heard two screams and two bawls, then nothing. But you know how dangerous it is these day so I did not come out until the bodies were found today. “I do not know much about the people except they talk funny and always fighting.” Smith sold hot dogs from a cart in downtown Port-of-Spain at night. Efforts to speak to her daughter Jenelle Kerr were futile. Police could not say if the couple was legally in the country or how long they had been here, but confirmed they had received information about regular fights and threats made by George. An autopsy is carded for today. Sgt Ramjit is continuing enquiries.
