Mt D’Or community gets help from lever
LEVER BROTHERS West Indies Ltd has moved to adopt Mt D’Or as part of its community outreach campaign, aimed at supporting the educational, healthcare and environmental needs of communities. The company launched a $500,000 project to improve the infrastructure and equipment needs at the Mt D’Or Government Primary School, which included painting of the building by Lever staffers, refurbishing the principal’s office, installation of 12 fully furnished computer workstations, fire extinguishers and a fully operational play park. The students were also exposed to an emergency evacuation drill to ensure that in case of an emergency, they would be aware of what to do. In addition, the company intends to adopt two students from Standards Two, Three, Four and Five and will be funding their educational requirements to the level of university, once they continue to meet the company’s educational requirements.
Lever Brothers also hosted a computer training programme for adults of the area, in collaboration with HYPE. The 35 participants who recently graduated from the programme have since begun studies on the HYPE programme at Macoya. The modern parenting course is another area the company saw as a requirement within the community, and as such the company teamed up with Families In Action to host special training sessions. The five-week course is expected to end today, and participants will be presented with certificates of participation. Communications specialist at Lever, Sean Samad, said some planned projects include night sports scheduled for next January, establishment of a vocational centre at Mt D’Or, and a health and wellness programme, where vision testing, audiometric tests, blood and sugar tests and other health issues would be targetted.
