Diego teen charged with wounding baby

An 18-year-old Diego Martin youth appeared before a Port-of-Spain magistrate yesterday charged with causing grievous bodily harm to a six-month-old baby. Facing Magistrate Maureen Gafoor in the city’s Fifth Court was Anton Cambridge of Cemetery Street, Diego Martin. Cambridge, who was represented by attorney Osbourne Charles SC, was not called on to plead. He was charged by Cpl Marcell of the West End Police after an incident Tuesday evening near his home.

The six-month-old baby girl remains warded in critical condition after being struck by a stone on the head. The baby was rushed to the Port-of-Spain General Hospital and was later transferred to the Wendy Fitzwilliam Paediatric Hospital at the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex, where she remains warded. Police prosecutors objected to bail for the accused yesterday on the grounds that a tracing had not yet been done. Cambridge will reappear in court today.
