Special Reserve cop killed in freak accident
A 24-year-old Special Reserve Police Constable attached to the Central Highway Patrol was killed in a freak accident at Busy Corner in Chaguanas around 3.30 am yesterday. Reports revealed that SRP Videsh Singh, of John Street in Montrose, was in the tray of a van travelling along Main Road, Chaguanas, when he told the driver Richard Bally to drive the wrong way into a one-way street. Bally drove into an area close to Busy Corner, where Singh reportedly fell out of the van. A report was made to the Chaguanas CID and a party of officers led by WPC Cpl Cumberbatch and others went to the scene and carried out enquiries.
Bally was interviewed by investigators and claimed that Singh appeared to be intoxicated. Police are calling the death accidental. At the Forensic Science Centre yesterday, an autopsy revealed that death was due to head injuries. Hostile relatives refused to be interviewed at the home of the dead officer. Senior police officers expressed embarrassment over the incident claiming the SRP broke the law by travelling in the tray of the van. They added that a recent campaign was launched to deal with “roadhogs” and errant motorists.
