Twiggy arrested for URP fraud

WELL-known political activist of the People’s National Movement in Laventille, Christina Lavia aka Twiggy, was yesterday arrested for fraud. Around 9 am, officers of the Fraud Squad went to her Laventille home armed with a warrant and arrested the 45-year-old Unemployment Relief Programme (URP) foreman. She was taken to Port-of-Spain Criminal Investigation Department where she was charged with 14 counts of fraud arising out of URP.
When Newsday visited the CID office yesterday afternoon her attorney Kenneth Monroe Browne was trying to arrange bail. He refused to talk to the press saying he needed to speak to his cleint to be appraised of what took place. However sources said that bail had been set at $40,000. Investigations revealed the arrest was made after months of investigations into the Women’s Programme being run in the Laventille constituency. Twiggy will appear before a Port-of-Spain magistrate today.
