Labour body calls on Govt to deal with crime
CONCERNED that the security of the citizens of Trinidad and Tobago is threatened by criminal activity, the National Trade Union Centre (NATUC), has issued a call to Government. “Act swiftly in restoring security and stability to our once tranquil nation,” said the labour body in a message to mark the 42nd anniversary of Independence. NATUC is particularly worried about physical attacks on individuals and intrusions into private homes. The union said, “Security is a fundamental precursor to national development and economic growth.” Noting the State possesses the economic requirements to provide the people with a proper health and education system, NATUC called on Government to place definite emphasis on meaningful redistribution of wealth in the country.
“The scandalous and spiralling increase in the price of food items remains a major challenge because as we celebrate our national Independence, there are far too many families who cannot sit down to an acceptable meal,” observed NATUC. The labour body called on Government to move towards nationalising all the major resources of the country. Dealing with other issues, NATUC chided the political directorate for refusing to allow the labour movement to make a definite contribution to national development. “Important State Boards remain without any representation whatsoever from labour. “Independence must mean more than a parade of national flags and colours. “Our nation must adopt international labour standards so the workers and employers can operate under a regime of progressive labour legislation which protects and respects the human rights of the country’s labour force,” said NATUC.
