Massive outage hits North, East Trinidad

Lightning yesterday tripped circuits at the Trinidad and Tobago Electricity Commis-sion’s (TTEC) Barataria and Port-of-Spain power stations, resulting in a massive power outage stretching from from Tunapuna to Chaguara-mas. Just before noon yesterday, heavy rains, accompanied by lightning and thunder, pounded certain parts of North and East Trinidad. According to TTEC’s corporate communications officer Dennis Mc Comie, more of these power outages can be expected if there is a repeat of yesterday’s weather. He said he could only assure that the company’s  team of technicians would do everything possible to restore power in the event that it goes again.

Meteorologist Shakeer Baig yesterday confirmed that since this is the hurricane season, more bad weather is expected. He said yesterday’s thundershowers and lightning were caused by the Inter Tropical Convergence Zone and “typical rainy season conditions.” He added that compared to last year, there has been above average rainfall even during the dry season months. When asked why Diego Martin residents have been experiencing power outages on almost a daily basis, Mc Comie said he was not aware of the situation, but would investigate it.
