Firebombs at Sat’s home
The Champs Fleur home of Maha Sabha secretary-general, Sat Maharaj, was firebombed on Friday night. Reports are that molotov cocktails were thrown at the house at about 1.30 am. Maharaj later found other molotov cocktails in his yard and on the roof. He described the firebombs as being made of channa soaked in gasoline. St Joseph Police are reportedly investigating, although when Newsday contacted them at 4 pm yesterday they claimed they did not have such a report.
Maharaj speculated the attack was linked to his support for the St Charles High School and its initial denial of a place to a pupil with dreadlocks. He told reporters this was the second time his house had been violently attacked, the first occasion being ten years ago when he supported a school in its opposition to pupils wearing Islamic hijabs. “In the dead of the night they had shot up my home. People who don’t like your position will try to silence you,” Maharaj said.
