Turning blue over yellow hair
In the past few weeks of doing this column, I have heard from several people who are experiencing problems with their hair and scalp. Some have sought professional help and there are some people who don’t quite know where to turn. I wish to admonish you not to take hair and scalp problems lightly but to address them from the onset. There are some conditions if not tackled in the early stages can lead to permanent hair loss. Also, some maladies may need to be treated by a doctor as well, so don’t delay, seek an early consultation. This week I will revisit some regular concerns of readers.
Dear Germaine
I have been relaxing my hair for years. I wanted to make a change so I had my hair braided for six months using synthetic hair. On removing the braids, I lost a lot of my hair. I am thinking of twisting and colouring my hair now but I am worried that I will lose more hair. Please help me.

Dear Scared
Change is good. The modern evolution of hair designs is inspired by change. However, to enjoy and fully benefit from these changes you need to understand that we shed and grow hair every day. It is quite possible that all the hair you lost when you removed the braids were the ones that were naturally shed. I can imagine that seeing them all at the same time may have been a shock, but do not be scared. As long as you were taking care of your hair during the six months you would have had an equal amount or more new hair. The twist is a good styling option and a very trendy natural look. However, you must be careful with the colour. As long as you do a colour change your hair maintenance will increase. Deep conditioning and perhaps protein will be necessary to maintain the integrity of your hair. You should also seek your hairdresser’s advice on the most suitable colour for your hair type.
Dear Germaine
My hair is naturally gray, which I like, but turns yellowish after each relaxer. In order to get rid of the yellow I have tried several hairdressers but they have all used a blue shampoo. I do not like the blue and want my hair white or silver. I am fed-up and was thinking of writing to Oprah for assistance since she is always on to the latest for black people. However, I started reading your articles and decided to seek your advice first. I still have faith that some hairdresser in TT can help. Is it you?
Fed-up
Dear Fed-Up
Thanks for giving me this opportunity to prove that we are world class in Trinidad and Tobago. I am sure that I can help. Relaxers break all the bonds that hold our hair together. Because of the chemical reaction the hair shaft becomes yellowish. The blue look to cover this yellow is very popular and well tolerated by most persons. Obviously your taste is different.
There are colour specialists who can correct this problem. I am surprised that you have not yet been pointed in that direction. Why not call me for an appointment. I am sure that your problem will disappear and that you will be happy once more with your bright silver gray hair. No more yellow or blues.
