Scalp massage works wonders

The environment, styling methods, chemical services and just plain wear and tear all contribute to hair damage, but hair damage can be prevented. As you have heard, an ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure. Let us visit an area that I consider as one of the most important areas for healthy scalp and blood circulation — massaging. Scalp manipulation or massage is recommended and should be part of regular treatments. It relaxes the client and loosens the scalp. This is what makes the blood come to the surface. So on your next visit to the salon, whether you are having a steam to maintain your healthy hair, or deep treatment for chemically abused hair, be sure your hair stylist gives you a scalp massage. It may cost you a little more but the benefits will outweigh the cost. Let them do the rotating hairline all around the skull, with the palms of their hands, then deep manipulation, applying pressure all over the scalp. This increases the flow of oxygen through your scalp.

Once you have had the massage, write and let me know how you felt. Everyone desires to have their hair in excellent condition. It’s a form of non-verbal communication. You know that people often judge you from your appearance. They are looking for successful chemical and styling services, not dull, lifeless or frizzy hair. To prevent damage to hair and scalp, use a gentle shampoo between 4.5 and 5.5 on the PH (Potential Hydrogen) scale — this is the scale that tells you the level of acidity or alkaline in a product. Most people believe that baby shampoo is the gentlest but this may not be so since it is formulated specifically to remove oils from baby’s hair. Your hair stylist would be able to recommend what is best for your hair. Seek advice before purchasing your shampoo. This is where proper hair care begins. After, discuss conditioners, moisturisers and protein for complex hair problems. I am sure that you now understand and appreciate the basics of hair care. Next week we will discuss hair relaxer and its history.

Scaly white hairline blues

Q: I have a scaly white line around my hairline and I need your advice.

A: Scaly white line around the hairline is a characteristic of seborrhea dermatitis, which must be treated. If left untreated it will spread behind your ear and in the crease of your nose. This condition also makes your scalp very sensitive, which will make it difficult for you to receive chemical services. You should seek a consultation with a trichologist.

Germaine Williams-Beckles is a qualified trichologist. If you have concerns about your hair or scalp send your queries to news@newsday.co.tt or call 625-6774.
