Write your own vows

TODAY, more and more couples are searching for ways to make their ceremony even more sentimental. Here are some suggestions for couples who want to add personal and creative touches to their wedding: Write your own vows or change some of the words found in the traditional vows. Be sure to get your officiant’s permission first! If you do decide to write your own vows, be sure and keep a written copy with you, in the event that wedding nerves cause a loss of memory!

Write a special poem, prayer or blessing for your partner and recite it during your ceremony. Have a favourite piece of music played or sung, something that is meaningful to you both, perhaps the song that reminds you of when you first met, the proposal or a happy experience you both shared. Print a programme for your guests. This allows you to explain the significance of rites and rituals from your ceremony, make special mention of those in the bridal party, include a brief summary of how you met, or a message of appreciation to your guests.

Honour and remember deceased relatives by lighting a candle or incense in their memory, saying a prayer or placing a bouquet on an empty seat. Celebrate your heritage by incorporating some of your cultural ancestry and traditions into the ceremony. Look for ways to incorporate traditional wedding elements with the non-traditional. If you have children with your partner or children from a previous marriage, include them in the ceremony by asking them to release helium balloons, bubbles, confetti, white doves or butterflies after the exchange of rings. Wear an heirloom piece that has special significance to your family or your partner’s family eg attire or jewelry.
