Landslide and flooding workshop at UWI
THE UNIVERSITY OF the West Indies (UWI), St Augustine, is hosting a one-day workshop focusing on reducing the dangers of landslides and flooding in Trinidad and Tobago on Wednesday, from 8.30 am to 5 pm. The one-day workshop, held at UWI’s Learning Resource Centre, is being presented by The Centre for Caribbean Land and Environmental Appraisal Research (CLEAR), Office of Research, at the University of the West Indies. The theme for the one-day workshop is “Enduring Geohazards in the Caribbean Region.” One of the feature speakers at the presentation will be Dr Derek Gay who will speak about “Engineering Approaches to Landslide Research.”
The Drainage Division will also make a presentation at the workshop titled “A Review of Major Flooding Issues in Trinidad and Tobago.” Participants will be introduced to concepts in mapping and modelling regional geohazards with the sessions concentrating on flood and landslide issues. Participants would also be exposed to how to apply modern, high technology instruments such as Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and Spatial Analysis to analyse possible hazards. The causes and impact of flooding and deforestation will also be examined and discussed.
